Android 2.2 Froyo is finally unveiled, 2-5x faster than Eclair

20 May, 2010
Just as expected Google announced the latest version of the Android OS at their I/O event. Android 2.2 Froyo has hardly been the industry best-kept secret so you probably already had an idea of what was coming...

Android's biggest inability is it can't run internal memory. Until they fix that, it's useless and performance figures matter nothing because external SD cards are slow, regardless of what your OS does and your processors clock speed. Android's achievements are about the number of phones they have ended up on and sold, but the app store is small still and people don't use it's features which is something they also have to address. Android has potential, nothing more yet, people have just gotten carried away.

Froyo looks yummie. Can't wait to see a device running 2.2, hopefully with a 1,3Ghz processor, by the end of this year...

@ Those complaining about the stage in which Android is. What Android has managed to do in the short time it's existing is amazing. The minor things that aren't available yet in the standard Android version are fixable by the free apps available. And if Android keeps on developing with this speed, it won't be long before Android is the only "acceptable" OS for any smartphone.

@ Those complaining about the X10 (or other phones). New devices always get newer versions first, before the existing devices get their updates. And if you buy a phone with a heavily modified version of some OS, e.g. Android 1.6 on the X10, you can already expect updates to come even later... If you want a phone with the newest OS (and the newest specs), you just need to get a new one regularly and 'till then be happy with the phone(s) you already have. Else you can wait forever, since development will never stop :P

As time goes by, the opportunities r endless with regard to feature updates and what not all/most of these companies will have to offer. The ultimate winner being the consumer!
