27 May, 2010
Altek announced the first 14 megapixel cameraphone capable of HD video recording and equipped with 3x optical zoom lens. Both Xenon and LED flashes are onboard and the best bit is that Leo will launch...

Oh come on, what is "Altek"??
How many of you have even heard of this brand before this article?

Just because they make a 14MP phone, do you really think it will have any affect at all on a major device like the Nokia N8.

Even if it had a 20MP camera. Anyone given a choice will pick a Nokia over some Unknown new brand.

Anonymous, 27 May 2010I don't know what YOU were reading, but according to GSMARE... moreIt's funny how you are telling me not to judge a phone before using it and in that same breath judging me without knowing how I get my information. How very juvenile.
Yes, I have seen some shots of the previous T8680 model. They were impressive, but the N8 shots are just as impressive. The quality is on par.
Regarding the OS, as the poster right after you said: they are guessing it could be Android. But then it might not be. What we have to go upon are previous models of this make. They had a custom OS. Until we get a review of -specifically- the Leo, we can't know what it will be. 3G and WiFi would imply a browser - but I merely speculated that the previous model had none, as it was only GPRS class 12.

Bottom line: please read comments (and articles) carefully before bashing.

Anonymous, 27 May 2010Actually you are WRONG about N8. Here is a rough comparison... moreI don't know what YOU were reading, but according to GSMARENA Wi-Fi and HSDPA are on board - so it's a stupid statement to say it won't come with a browser since (and you didn't read this obviously) it is ANDROID OS.

You're judging it's camera performance without even having seen ONE single photo. The fact that it runs android is already telling you that this will be a capable smartphone. Symbian is not quite there yet, especially not in the mobile application industry.

I think that the Leo is a niche device, but it's damn interesting!

Anonymous, 27 May 2010yeah, but this phone/camera looks way better than the N8, ... moreActually you are WRONG about N8. Here is a rough comparison:

Sensor type: N8 - CCD ; Altek - CCD (Verdict: equal)
            Sensor size: N8 - 1/1.83" ; Altek - 1/2.33" (Verdict: N8 better)
            Zoom: N8 - none/digital ; Altek - 3x optical (Verdict: Altek better)
Flash: N8 - Xenon ; Altek - Xenon (Verdict: equal)

So in camera features the phones are very equal. The Altek phone has a 3x zoom, but N8 makes up for that with a considerably bigger sensor. Everything else is equal in the camera department. Essentially the Altek is a camera that you can make an odd call with or send an SMS. You are better off with a standalone camera than an Altek, simply because a standalone camera can give you 5x-20x zoom levels with the same sensor and image quality. If you want a camera smartphone, well this is not it.

On top of all this, the N8 has full connectivity, full flash support, a stable OS and a lot of other features.
The Altek phone (the T8680 model) has only GSM bands, no WiFi or other goodies, and probably no browser. This new 14MP model (Leo) should have 3G and WiFi, but we have yet to see what OS it will sport. If Android, well and good. If not, then it definitely can't stand a chance vs the N8.

All this said, it's a good direction they are moving in. The camera/phone is good in its league, just please do not confuse it with N8 or Satio or similar smartphones. A smartphone is much more than a good camera.

Tom-Helge, 27 May 2010What does that helps when Nokia N8 isn't the king of camera... moreThe previous (T8680 model) was only sold in China and Taiwan (and maybe one or two other South East Asian countries). It never made it to the wider market due to the OS and connectivity limitations. So I don't think Nokia is in any danger of being blown out of its hot spot. The N8 is still the best widely available cameraphone on the market today, period.

As another update, after reading a review on the Altek T8680 (latest model, 12MP) it looks like the phone features are few. It can send/receive calls and messages, but that's about it. Also no WiFi or 3G. And I suppose the browser is in its infancy, if there is one at all. However, the Leo might see some improvements in that department (at least in the connectivity, and hopefully also in the browser). Don't expect any miracles on the OS side though, unless they take the step forward and put Android on it.

This is a Taiwanese company apparently. I would really like to see if they will offer anything in Europe. Sadly a lot of good Asian products never find their way beyond Asia.

[deleted post]What does that helps when Nokia N8 isn't the king of camera phones anylonger :-) ?.

And if this phone is released before Nokia N8, then i'm gonna laugh hard.

Nokia can't sell the N8 as the best camera phone anylonger then.

And if this Altek phone is going to run Android 2.2 on top it, then this phone will be very nice if the other specs are good.

They seem to be known for purely cameraphones. Here's a link to their latest (before Leo) phone:

                                  http://www.altek.com.tw/Product/Detail.aspx?id=15

Seems to have very nice photography specs. Although by what can be judged from the spec sheet, it seems to have a custom-made OS (limited phone book entries, no OS name). So it looks like a camera with phone features rather than a smartphone with camera features. Still impressive if image quality is what you're after.

Better lens, better sensor and less megapixel, 3, or 5 maybe.
Should’ve done that. But smaller megapixel doesn’t look pretty on specs :P

Since they’re camera OEM, I wonder how much control they’ll give and what the camera’s specs.

BTW, other than the big players (Zeiss, Schneider, those kind of names), is there many cheap manufacturers in the lens business ?
