Its just sad to see poeple flaming Nokia when they've lagged behind in software and not hardware.
The N97 even if it had 1Ghz would be useless cause the phone can only do so much.. all that would've happened is we the consumers would have paid more

Doersn't help if the OS is fast when the games and other programs are slower than a snail use to go around the world.
The things that matters today is to have a mobile phone that both have an extremely fast OS while having insanly fast speed on all applications and games.
Doesn't help to have an OS that are fast when everything is so slow that i can be a grandfather before the phone have managed to open a program.

So these processor powers are good because same processors are using in Tablets too or oversized mobiles such as HD2 or X10 or the recent Dell Mini. They will perform better, tablets can deliver good battery life too because of the sizes so I think overall it is a good news.
With a good mount of juice, users (who deserves to do more) will be more productive on the way. Looking forward to see these in action.

I'd agree with some of the comments here, in that battery life needs to be improved quite dramatically in line with processor speed, otherwise any of the gains will be lost, also companies reputations will suffer because of the poor battery life.
Operating Software will also need to be to be carefully rewritten to take full advantage of the increased processing power, but without duly compromising the battery life, no easy task.

Just to note something.
My current smartphone has more computing power than NASA used to send men to moon. why i might need more processing power?
May be because OS/App developers are too lazy to optimize their software?
Or because smartphone can not record 30 sec of HD video? Which is not so HD, because of lack of memory and high compression ratio...

Instead of 1.2Ghz x 2 I would like to see a battery 1500mAh x 2 or may be 1500mAh x 4 that that lasts for 10 days with regular use..lolzzii...

Lol, 01 Jun 2010And nokia is still on 680 mhz.I have been reading news and Nokia was with 600s processors uptill now because of differences between two companies. Since they are over few months ago and both companies announced they will now product 1ghz handsets so you will going to see some very soon
Another reason is Nokia with 600s processor is because both their OSes, Symbian and Meego doesn't need whole lot of power to drive real rich-features OSes. In result, less investment and good handsets.
And before you guys put a Nokia-fan stamp on me, I am not on Nokia's side, I don't like Nokia at all but I respect them and I like Symbian as OS.

The CPU speed is less important than the OS speed. Having a powerful CPU allows badly designed software to run at least acceptable. This will decrease the time-to-market for companies like HTC, Samsung, Motorola and such. The quality of software running on a certain handset will always come second.
Apple on the other hand, does with a 600MHz CPU (plus a GPU they know how to use) more than HTC on 1 GHz for example. Also Apple make one model a year which is easy to maintain and also helps building their marketing strategies.
However: it is much more easier to build a new SoC than a new/better OS. For increased speed sometimes just changing the technology (i.e.: 28 nm node) could be enough.

I bet Samsung are the first to bring out a phone with these processors and will chuck everything they are capable of handling all in the device and the battery will last an hour and the processor will feel as slow as the an N95.
