Why split it into two, This is a case of putting the bullets into the gun and now just waiting for the pulling of the trigger to shoot yourselves in the foot.
Keep android simple and keep it on track.
It will lead to people thinking twice about buying certain phones if the updates are not forthcoming.

Don't be too excited yet, Android users. Obviously Google's own phone will get it first but then it's anyone's guess when other phones will get it. Some Android phones are still stuck with 1.6

instead of making new devices every 2days with new features cnt google slow down an update their existing phones yet and add the same features?!! something called CustomerSupport?? whats the point of having a so called gingerbread when the phones of htc. sony ericsson , motorola and samsung havent rolled out the froyo update?!! as much as i lluv android i cant buy for example a galaxy S and then th next phone samsung wil release will b 4.5 inch then ill go crazy...i would rather switch to the something else lyk BlackBerry or anything..sori android ;P

Although I feel Android is a strong product I think it is a kick in the teeth to early adopters that within 6 months there phones will no longer be getting full support and realistically be phased out. They already have issues for developers in the sense there is no standard resolution, performance benchmark and the like, make the iPhone app store a far more marketable product. IMO Android must stick with one OS, with standardized feature sets over all manuactuers (obviously cameras, designs, battery life etc could all be different) but I feel they need to offer more support and customer trust they will have a up to date phone for longer. Software is becoming a larger part of smartphones, so no longer is the days of buying a phone and every day that goes past your phone gets more obsolete, there is an expectation it will last.

And you are using fragmentation wrongly because android isnt fragmentet. It's just a Buzz word and I bet you don't even know the meaning of that word.
And the tech specs are just recommandation it's like buying a computer game. It has recommended specs too run the game too get full experiance. It will propobly work with slower machines but not good.
People would propobly be even more angry if their phones started too hack. That would happen if every Android phone would get 3.0. I bet those HTC Legend people would be angry if their phone would become choppy thanks to android 3.0

do they want to make their android OS like their browser "google chrome"? its barely 1 year and they have made the 6th version which is still beta lol so i guess im never getting an android-based phone,it gets out-dated in less than 6 months...what a shame for google!

There are people who have just gotten a brand new HTC Legend who will be dissappointed at this news. I think the quality of Android almost completely outshines that of the iPhone, but I would be more inclined to jump on the bandwagon if they didn't keep moving so fast with their upgrades and handsets. I want a handest that will last...not look outdated in two months time.

Devices with screens 4" and bigger can not be callled mobile-phones because they are to big and not pocketfriendly. Its better to buy a netbook, for your backpack, and a small mobile-phone for your pocket.

Don't worry people, Android 3.0 doesn't mean there won't be custom UIs from different manufacturers. It's just that these UIs will be run on the application level and be more easily uninstalled or disabled. =)

lol you get the feeling everyone is trying to keep up with Mr Apple haha. seems so much uncertainty in the other mobile companies/devices this just re-assures me about buying the iphone 4 hands down for the next 12-24mths unless nokia release a awesome mameo 6 with same hardware or superior specs to iphone.

Certainly sounds interesting.
Nexus One users may get the update first, if they're not on Vodafone at least (yes, i'm still sore about froyo being delayed for voda customers)

Like someone already said... specs wise Galaxy S meets the minimum requirements, but as we all know Samsung Froyo might come at the time gingerbread will be released and Samsung will then refuse to upgrade to gingerbread. :S
I hope that at least we will have custom ROMs that will fix that problem. :D
Now buying my sweetlooking Galaxy S... :D

Nice, hoever 720P screens make zero sense. How the hell could you use a res that big on a small phone? It seems like they are only doing it to say they are first. I hope that trend doesnt continue. I am find with the current 800 Res on my N900 I couldnt imagine a bigger res then that.

This is a painful, yet good shift.
I was about to get a Milestone, but after hearing this I'll wait for Galaxy S Pro(qwerty)or I'll wait for qwerty device that will ship with android 3.0 by default.
And I am glad that one UI will be on all devices. And as a project manager in software development company I strongly encourage standardizing only 3 or 4 different screen resolutions. preferably 3. That makes software dev much easier and makes apps work consistently from one device to another.
Consistent UI is also good for several reasons. All devs will work together on a single UI, pooling the previously scattered resources. The second one is that one can change a phone with no learning curve whatsoever.
In the long run, this will reduce the fragmentation. This should have been done from the get-go, but better late than never.

I'm a bit dissapointed in the news of no more 3rd party UI's, unless they can give us something that's going to be similar to all the other current UI's which is a big task to achieve. Hopefully they'll come up with something that can beat HTC Sense but it'll have to be really special.
