Antenna wars: RIM, HTC and Nokia strike back at Apple

18 July, 2010
That was one hell of an odd press conference on Friday. Typical Apple. Instead of just admitting its faults Apple decided to point a finger at the other mobile phone manufacturers and accuse them of selling...

Which means, people don't really care as to what Consumer Reports has to say. Consumer Reports need to be fair as well and subject all devices under the same testing and not single out the iphone. You know why they subjected the iphone to more rigid antenna testing? It's because they've already heard of the antennagate issue before reviewing the iphone4. They already have their prejudices of the iphone4.

Anonymous, 19 Jul 2010Seriously grow up. Common issue?!?!?!? They why the hell is... moreYou asked why Apple held the press con? You mean you had no idea how aggressively the media has been attacking the Apple? The Consumer Reports was the last straw. Apple had to speak up. As Steve had said, they are giving away cases to make their customers happy. They don't have to. Iphone users have been buying cases for their 2g, 3g, and 3gs. Why would the iphone4 be any different?

As I have said. Apple has to prove their statement that the iphone4 is not the only device that has a weak spot. How else are they going to prove their statement? And why would the others react defensively if it's true that their phones have weak spots as well? They never denied Apple's statements, did they? And who said that the iphone4 is perfect? Steve repeated it several times during the press con that the iphone is not perfect. Didn't you hear him say that? What's disgusting is a biased person like you who doesn't want to give others a chance to share their side of the story. As Apple said, don't buy it if you don't want it. The iphone4 is still sold out in stores, so who cares if you do you do not buy it?

why do people can't accept or understand the fact that what Apple presented was true? that the reception issue is part of a characteristic of an antenna. that it's one of the most challenging to design? and that happening on iPhone or any other smartphone is caused by this characteristics? If you don't like the phone, just don't buy it. simple.

Anonymous, 19 Jul 2010Apple is not panicking at all. They are still sold out of ... moreSeriously grow up. Common issue?!?!?!? They why the hell is this the first time we've ever seen a press conference about dodgy signal reception? And why give out free cases for all when they've already denied the problem even exists?

Apple is so full of it. And to try and make themselves look less at fault by naming other companies is not good business, they should prepare for a backlash!

I'm in the UK. And I was going to buy an iphone 4, but before buying a phone I always wait a few weeks to see how it fairs before committing. Would you believe it Apple fans, that EVERY shop I have ever held an iphone 4 in (several shops, several iphone 4's in each shop = many) I have ALWAYS lost signal when holding the phone as I would normally. Those of you denying this fault are in denial! Its not a bad phone, but don't be so childish by pretending its perfect! I'm disgusted with Apple's response by denying the issue, and then trying to re-direct the attention when they have no choice but to admit the fault.

And for those saying 'yeah but only a low percentage of users have reported issues' DOES NOT MEAN THEY ARE THE ONLY USERS EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE!

I'm an Apple fan. I think their software packages are fabulous and they normally offer a sleek (if slightly inflated cost) design and quality products. The iPhone is quality, the OS is my favourite on any phone, despite it's obvious flaws. But in this case, they are wrong, seriously wrong. I disagree with the RIM quote "we use innovative radio... (whatever it was)." They don't use innovative designs, they just elaborate on traditional designs that work, something Apple should have stuck to, or got the new design right. It's not innovative if it sets people backwards like this Apple one. Their arrogance over this whole thing hasn't sat right with myself and other people who enjoy their products, so no iPhone for me this time around, but I'll stick with my macs. Maybe they'll get it right next year, i hope so, because this Nexus is clumsy.

Jiro, 19 Jul 2010Apple panic..hahahaaaApple is not panicking at all. They are still sold out of iphone4's. They're doing really well. But I'm sure they're disappointed by the media on how the media singled them out on a common issue amongst cellphones. And I think that it's pretty heartless, evil, and opportunistic of rim and nokia to take advantage of this unfortunate media attack towards Apple when they know that their phones have weak spots as well.

Just read rim's and nokia's press releases carefully. THEY NEVER DENIED Apple's statement that their phones have weak spots. They just want to wash their hands off and let Apple face all the media attacks alone, when all of them pretty much suffer the same antenna weak spot challenges, hoping that this would lead to the iphone's demise. How disgraceful.

Apple sells more iPhones outside America, especially in Europe where the networks are better.

                                      btw AT&T/Cingular before the iPhone:-

A new federal lawsuit1 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California details how Cingular's advertising claims of being the carrier with the "fewest dropped calls" lured consumers to Cingular's service. The complaint explains how these advertising claims were made while Cingular was in fact one of the worst wireless providers in many major markets. At UCAN, Cingular(now AT&T) is one of the companies consumers complain of most. You can see UCAN's various actions against Cingular here and here.
