Antennagate ain't over, Samsung and Motorola respond, too

19 July, 2010
After RIM, HTC and Nokia, it was about time for the respond of the rest of the companies affected by Apple's statements last Friday. Well, here is what Samsung and Motorola have to say about the whole shebang...

aaptk, 20 Jul 2010quote from gsmarena: Okay, let’s explain how this works ... moreAnd who's saying that not all of us iphone4 users have this attenuation issue when that black strip is touched? Lol. It is there, and all iphone4 users will lose bars the moment we touch that strip. But that is not the point that I am trying to relay. Iphone users have been buying cases for their iphones even from the very 1st iphone released. Iphone4 is no different, and that is why iphone4 users have been doing just fine. And those who chose not to get a case (a few), simply avoids that small black strip, and it's not hard to avoid at all.

Now. I am not saying that this is totally ok. All I am saying is, it is not that bad like the way the media and the haters have exaggerated it to be. And, this is Apple's first attempt to innovate antenna design. And for their first try, this issue is not that bad, and users can work around it easily with a case. It will only get better in the future. And unfortunately for the others, they cannot be allowes to have external antennas due to their harsh criticisms towards the iphone4 :)

There are a lot of benefits having the antenna externally, and it's worth the risk that Apple has taken. The iphone4 indeed has better reception and better call quality than previous iphones. Plus, with the antenna part of the outside hardware, they're able to increase battery size, provide more internal hardware space for other features, and produces the slimmest smartphone in the world. It's worth it, and eventhough it's not perfect, it can only get better and better. And unfortunately for the others, they better not adopt this antenna approach by Apple because it would make them look bad after all the bad criticisms they've been throwing at Apple. Everyone will be stuck making room for antennas internally while Apple will be enjoying all the internal hardware space and slim design and better reception :)

The iphone4's retina display edges out samsung's samoled displays almost in all aspects.  The only thing that the samoled display is better is on deep blacks.  And why would LG  take credit for the iphone4's display?  Use your common sense.  If LG put together all the elements for the iphone4's display, don't you think they should be the one introducing the retina display on their phones before the iphone?

What's wrong with buying technology?  Apple is primarily a software company, not hardware.  And they're giving business to samsung, lg and other manufacturers, how can that be bad?  So what do you think of google's android devices?  Their hardware is htc.  So they're ok to use others, but Apple is not?

As a first attempt on this external antenna design, I say they did pretty well. When they figure out a way to make this work without a case and totally ELIMINATE A WEAK SPOT that all phones have right now, let's see what the others will do :)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but external antenna connected to the body is an area pioneered by Nokia way back and they have already moved on to better designs. In fact Nokia is a huge innovator in antenna design and they have a lot of patents. Apple cannot make a good design without stepping on Nokia's and Motorola's patents and I think the current debacle is a result of the same.

Anonymous, 20 Jul 2010Prove it. Where are some numbers.proove what. Most experienced phone makers manage the compromise that is antenna design. Signal levels and bandwidth are continually varying depending upon; 1) orientation of device relative to cell towers 2) infrastructure between cell towers and device 3) electrical properties of anything that is contacting the antennas

This compromise is made by experienced manufactures such that calls are not dropped. Each manufacture has there own standards. external antenna have been avoided probably because they
contact with conducting materials change the antenna frequency response. This makes it quite difficult to design a system that is robust and doesn't drop calls.

I personally care about reception as my home is relatively old with stucko exterior walls. these stucko walls have a thick gage wire mesh in them doing a remakable good job at blocking radio waves (faraday cage). thus I require a phone with exceptional reception. In my experience nokia products (6131,6500 6700C,6600 Slide,6303,7510, 6630) do better than other manufactures (Apple 3G, HTC advantage 7500, LG BL40, Sharp GX30, SE 39, SE 39, SE 810, samsung M7500). Thus I suggest to you, that rigorous tests of reception would not improve apples press.

                                      >>>>LOL, so the lack of Flash LED that all the haters were laughing about on the iphone suddenly "isn't needed" on the Galaxy? Rubbish. The Nokia N86 takes photos in a low light, but it's sensor still needed dual flash. No mobile sensor can do without flash in low light.

So you are saying that while iPhone fanboi's defended iPhone not having flash, its now become an important feature because guess why iPhone has it now. For the record, Apple didn't have flash in any of its phones till now, its a new feature for them. Samsung have hand flash in their phones since 2003. If they decided to exclude it in this particular phone there must be a valid reason for that. Cameras in phones are useless in perfect darkness despite having flash. The main utility of flash in such phones is as a flash light. In low light conditions Galaxy S can take decent enough shots without flash. This is rumored to be reason for not including flash. If you care to check on the internet, there are forum threads regarding this.

                                      >>>>Galaxy - screen inferior and "fools" the eyes into thinking it's better than it really is. Look closely at the definition on the iphone 4's screen. It's clearly superior and easy on the eye. It's the best AMOLED screen there is. And that's about it.

Both S-AMOLED and Retina display have different advantages and roughly on par. Retina Display has better text and S-AMOLED has better colors, contrast, response times and lower power consumption. The differences under a microscope don't matter for a every day user. Also the credit for Retina display goes to LG and not Apple.

                                      >>>> As for the Gyroscope, Apple is once again leading the way in making good use of existing technology and Samsung have only added it to their Captivate variant at a late stage! Copycats :p

And apple does nothing more than buy technology. Its not as if they innovate either. Multi-Touch was bought from a Swedish company that went bankrupt, Retina display is developed by LG and even Apple A4 has origins in technology developed by Intrinsity and Samsung. Even after buying out Intrinsity, its samsung who manufactures their A4 chips.
