Apple squeezes the reception out of Nokia N97 mini

21 July, 2010
Apple seem keen to prove other smartphones have the same reception attenuation as the iPhone 4. And they are getting back with a video of Nokia N97 mini that suffers from the same grip of death as the iPhone...

Do you believe N8 can support 1.5TB harddisk (as you know 1TB=1000gb) or maybe even more. But problem on Symbian is its UI. Though you can change ui by changing themes. And about Meego, clearly it will be going to be most powerful smartphone OS.

Yeah I agree with you Apple have put a sour taste in my month by their attitude lately. And the strange thing is, this is so NOT Apple! I remember, back in the 80s and 90s, Apple was known as the anti-Microsoft and they would never have this snobbish "better than everyone attitude." It's a shame because the Apple products are still so good. OK, I still use Windows PC, not Mac, but still....:)

The n97 lose signal strength but doesn't loses the entire signal still has 2 bars left, not like the I...e that loses the hole signal,so I don't see the point of making this stupid videos, their the one's losing because the other phones doesn't lose the hole signal either.
          Apple you suck....

Niraj, I actually have never used Meego. But I'm at least glad Nokia are trying something else other than Symbian! Symbian was one of the best mobile OS ever, but let's admit it, the OS became old fashioned and it needed a serious improvement. I loved the Nokia E71 but times change and we need to move on.

How is Meego for touchscreens? I assume it's better than Symbian! Yes, N9 sounds like an incredible phone!

OK, apple you did a mistake but we forgive you,no need to involve others in your own mistakes (childish).
yes may be you are wright the others have antenna bars dropping but we never heard ppl complaining of dropped calls in Nokia, samsung, htc, rim, motorola phones.
only the iphone 4 has the unique and stupid antenna design which allows the user to end the call by holding the phone like human being.

Peter, 21 Jul 2010Is it just me, or is gsmarena going overboard with these ri... moreI agree, GSMARENA has been rather anti Apple of late. But I think its only because of Apple's appalling behavior of late. They used to be very pro Apple, but I think events during the past year have show how truly arrogant Apple is. First with the scandal over the original iPhone4 leak, with the whole Gizmodo editor raid saga. They turned on an important ally, the press. Sure, leaking the phone wasn't a great idea, but thats what generates interest. They could have taken actions that didn't involve turning one of their key potential supporters into a criminal.

Then the unprovoked attacks on Adobe and Flash, simply because writers and reviewers had identifies lack of flash as an iPhone/iPad weakness. they can say all they want about flash, but the fact is most of the web uses flash, and the internet ain't gonna change for Steve Jobs, so when you tell me you've given me the internet in my hand but I don't have flash, you have not given me THE WHOLE internet.

Then the fact that Apple basically takes features they have been invented ages ago and makes it seem like they invented them for the first time. Multitasking, video calls and copy/paste have bee around for ages.

And then pointing the finger at other manufactures when your own product has been exposed, thats a sickening low, in any industry. Yes iPhone was probably the greatest innovation in smartphones, but the fact is the pack has caught up and surpassed them. Now its Apple playing catch up ( I mean in terms on usability and innovation, not sales). Adding folders, multitasking, pretty soon iPhone OS will have widgets too. And again Steve Jobs will spin it to look like THEY came up with it.

Apple lives by by reinventing the market and changing the game. But groundbreaking innovations don't just come all the time. Its at those times that you have to just keep your product going and PLAY FAIR until the next breakthrough comes. Apple is not playing fair, and thats why they've lost a fan in GSMARENA.

soooo...all that proves is that the n97 mini will lose 5 bars of signal when held that way. As far as i know, my phine, when in weak coverage areas, drops the 3g signal altogheter and goes back to the non 3g network and calls continue to work and sound just fine. Even when i lost all my signal because of, say, going trough a tunnel, the phone didn't hang up and the call went on after exitung the tunel. As a refference, i own the nokia n70 and the 5230. None of them have ever dropped any of my calls. all this stupid experiment by apple does is prove beyond the hope of a doubt that the iphone is among the few phones that can loose enough signal to stop recognizing the network and drop a call. What i want to see in order to make a valid point would be to test a phone in an area with optimum signal strenght and then see if someone can phone in such a way to as to cause the phone to stop seeing the network. i tried doing this with both of my nokia phones and the sony erricson k320. They do loose signal, but not all of it. Even one bar of signal is enough to keep a call going... Apple are just making fools of themselves and liking it so much that they just keep coming back for more. Who's next to be tested by apple? Motorola, the grand-daddy of the mobile phone? Htc,who have close to a decade of smartphone experience? I bet huawey have better aerial designs than apple. Mine works atleast...

I'm happy for you if you can live with that, without this issue causing you any concerns on what you just spent your money on.

What most people are saying is that:

                      A) It's a premium product, therefore this issues is unacceptable.
                      B) The iPhone 4 is EXPENSIVE. Flaws don't fit the label "Expensive".
                      C) Apple are not taking responsibility for this error, but rather trying to get away with it in any way they can.

Apple has received enough praise and pats on its back, it's time to take the good with the bad and reinvest some money and rectify this issue.

I like the iPhone and am considering buying one - but not like this!"

Good point. Yeah the price is expensive (but that's a totally separate argument). And I just with the Apple guys could have accepted their mistake like everyone else. It's not so hard to make a statement saying "We are aware of the antennae issue and are looking into it." Steve Jobs could easily have said something like "On behalf of Apple, I would like to thank all our loyal and new customers for their purchase of the iPhone 4 and would like to apologize for the antennae issue. We are looking into getting it resolved as best as we can." Then he could have gone on about how the issue is there in all phones and is not uniqe to Apple.

You guys should realize that what Steve Jobs said is actually true. But the way he said it makes you want to kick him in the balls! :)

yes attenuation is a problem, but not that pathetic as is with apple iphone4. I tries covering back of my n86 with hand and bars dropped to 2/1 sometimes but there was no full cutoff. So no problem like dropped calls etc with nokia phones.

There is seriously something wrong with these American networks like AT&T... Maybe it's due to the different frequency bands they use.

Because like in Asia, to get my 5800's signal to go from 7 bars (full) to 6 bars, I have to grip the bottom tightly with both hands for about a minute. It does not go below that BTW!

1st Apple needs to stop pointing fingers and fix their own problem.

2nd America needs to adapt European,/Asian network frequencies!

This "grip of death" is just stupid. It's happens to everything that sends out a signal. It's not some new mystery. I want to see Apple trup that with like an old Palm Treo 650 it wouldn't work because the antenna is at the top of the phone. If you go out of your way to cover the antenna then yes it won't work. The thing is with the iPhone4 the placement of theirs in in such a place where holding it like a normal person effects it. Look at how that person is holding that phone, and really sit back and think aobut how you hold your own phone. No one under the sun holds a cell phone like that, unless their old people who use two hands. Because that grip, wouldn't allow you to use it with one hand. They going around and intenionally covering the antennas on these devices. My 8900 Curve don't have that issue, my old Innov8 dosn't have this issue, nor did my, Moto Razr, SE W600, Samsung D900, or the U900 Soul. Apple messed up admit it and move on.
