22 July, 2010

sherif, 22 Jul 2010yes you have a point and i think nokia killed symbian when ... morethey should have had maemo as high end and symbian as mid and s40 as low end

and have symbi3n as the mainstream OS but they killed it with 4

                or

make symbian heavier ONLY for the high end models

                like how maemo is

Anonymous, 22 Jul 2010Nokia = EPIC FAIL Symbian = DEADNokia simply put too much faith in symbian. Its easy to use but just doesn't have the same depth as other systems. They also failed to develope their ovi store to compete with android and apple. Hopefully they make the switch to Android, or the new symbian 4 makes some drastic changes to bring it in line with the others. Despite that, nokia do make great phones and should continue to. They should be proud that they make hundreds of different models for different demographics each year and report relatively low technical issues.

If you think about it Apple had 3 years to just make 1 phone, and they messed up something as vital as the antenna. That is either really lazy or really negligent on their part.

                        symbi3n then symbi4n like wth

they should have symbian 3 with the option to customize like symbi4n it and make the phones with more RAM and stronger CPU but downclocked

                        like with the ARM A8

see how the N900 is still a beast

they should make more phones like that with maemo and leave meego since nothing is really happening with it

spk307, 22 Jul 2010Can someone tell me how the average price of smartphone is ... moresmartphone is just a label used for phones with some specific features. There are alot of smartphones out there that one wouldn't think of as being a smartphone, for example the Sony Erricson Satio. Works like any other phone but the GUI is decptively simple and hides alot of the smart features. So there are alot of smart phones out there that are very cheap, however you do hear about the bigger more powerful ones much more.

All the news surrounding Nokia as of late are pretty consistent. Profits are down and there are changes going on in the executive positions. Their high end smartphone offering is just not up to par with their competitors. Nokia does have a wide range of products, so lower end phones are at least helping the bottom line.

Since the introduction of the iPhone in 07, the market has taken a dramatic change. Apple revolutionized the industry by bringing smartphones into the main stream. It made it cool and fashionable to own a gadget that is a phone and a bunch of other non-phone related things. People who would only really wanted a phone before, now want a smartphone instead or perhaps more accurately, an iPhone or something like an iPhone. I've heard the term "iPhone killer" as of late. In reality, the iPhone is the cell phone or non-smartphone killer. The iPhone is partly the reason I upgraded from my old cell phone to a smartphone (which happens to be the N97). I didn't know much about smartphones before purchasing one, but I felt I wanted one and felt that it could be more useful than my old cell phone.

Nokia has some catching up to do on the smartphone front. That is where the market is going. Right now, the iPhone is the leader, various Android phones and companies who make them are gaining ground. Nokia's phones on Symbian just doesn't seem to be able to keep up and I don't know if Meego can gain traction fast enough.

When I go to various web sites, I see a lot of support for iOS and Android in terms of apps available. Business oriented web sites support Blackberry as well. For Symbian, I see very few. It's a little disheartening when you click on the mobile section of a web site and time and time again, it says there is no app available for Symbian.

Changes are happening at the top levels at Nokia. We'll have to wait several months to see how well Nokia can make the transition.

                                      P.S.

Just some background. I've used Nokia products for the past several years. I try to choose a product based on my needs rather than the brand. The N97 that I chose fits my specific needs better than any others at the time, but I wouldn't recommend it as a general purpose device for most. I love my N97, but it's not for everyone.
