Nokia N9 poses for new shots, looks like a mini MacBook

19 August, 2010
It seems the Nokia N9 teaser video that leaked back in June might turn out to be the real deal. Today's detailed pictures show the same QWERTY slider we saw before, supposedly running MeeGo OS...

exNokiaFan, 20 Aug 2010wow seems to me you are just trying to justify your love fo... moreNo doubt, ram is a keyfactor in os performance but still how do you determine the optimum amount of ram to stick in a phone? How do you know the optimum amount required to run an os? Comparing ram amounts betweenr os's is as dumb as any. Windows xp runs fine on 256mb. Vista won't dare on anything less than 1gb. Windows 7 runs lag free on 512mb. See the difference?

You need to understand that the people at nokia know much more than you do. Why would'nt they just stick it in if it would make it better? I mean they wanna sell it.

The n95 was the first true allround smartphone. 64mb ram is sufficient to run s60v3. The problem was users heavy on multitasking. The ram was doubled (128mb) to allow users use more apps at once. It didn't make the device faster or more fluid or the os any more stable. Its impossible to deplete 128mb ram on s60v3. So 256. . . Thats something formidable if the os still starts with an s.

Anyway, this is a meego unit. It'll probably have the big processor and bulky ram you wan't so bad.

Engineer Man, 20 Aug 2010Whatever people say. There are humpteen factors involved fo... morewow seems to me you are just trying to justify your love for Nokia. Sorry but like i said Ram is a key factor in over all user experience. Things processor efficiency and ram makes up a lot. Nokia has a track record of using low end products that barely worked. Case in point, Nokia N95. Their limited amount of ram lead to many flaws on the phone. Then they released the N95-8GB which had an "increase" of 32MB ram.. wow.. So tell me why did Nokia need to release the 8GB version with memory increase if ram wasn't as importance as you said? Because Nokia actually listened to their customers for once when they complained about how lack of RAM on the N95 was affecting user experience. Why do you think Iphone users have a better general over all experience? Because of the CPU architecture. A8 SoC is far superior than anything that Nokia used in the pass. Even their endeavors to use the A8 in the Nokia N900 was a failure due to their choice of OS. You can tout about how Symbian and Maemo is open source all you want and that how it's a community "full of developers". Yet OVI store and maemo really had nothing enticing for it to keep market share. I purchased the N900 in hopes that it would've rekindle my interest in Nokia phones once again. However the experience left a bitter taste in my mouth. In a tech market where cutting edge is what sells you don't put out a product with "just fast enough specs" and call it a top end phone. Could you have imagined if Samsung released the Galaxy S with a 600Mhz version of the A8 and a detuned hummingbird? The user experience would be totally different from what the Galaxy S is today. I have the Galaxy S right now as my primary phone and I am very pleased with it. I have nothing against Nokia, I only go with the product that fits my needs best. The E71 was a great phone as its battery usage was wonderful. If Nokia produces the N9 with specs that can contend in today's market and give a better user experience then I will gladly buy it.

                              Symbian started 100 - 200mhz with 32 -64mb

                              And now is at 434 - 680mhz
                              128 -256mb ram

                              Android,ios,winmo and bbos all need 500mhz - 1ghz
256 -512mb ram just to run properly

With what symbian is capable of doing with low clockspeed and ram

How symbian was built was to utilize every resorce available with minimal power

Its only rational for one to be cautious about symbian considering devices like the n97. But one must appretiate the difference between s^1 and s^3.

S^1 was nokias hurried response to the touch screen age. Basically s60v3 with a touch overlay and some lame graphics. S60v3 on its own, is undoubtably the best os in its category. But it wasn't designed for touch. Symbians success is mainly due to its functionality and compatibility with numerous platforms but also due to its efficiency. It prides itsself with being able to run and perform on the cheapest hardware. Infact, thats what it was designed to do. S^1 complicates matters with its graphics. Kinetic scrolling, vibra feedback, . . . Symbian wasn't meant to do all these hence the crashes and restarts. Faster processors don't help. Its like windows vista. The biggest of processors and the bulkiest of ram, windows explorer would still 'not respond' atleast once every hour. The absence of a gpu to run graphics in s^1 devices show how ill optimized the os was. Updates have solved much of these issues though. Atleast i know nokia 5230 on firmware 20.xx is as smooth as it gets.

S^3 is the product of decades of experience in mobile manufacture and 2years of experience in the manufacture of touch screens. Its touch to the core. Why then would you expect anything but performance from it?
