Even if something's so popular and marketable right now, it doesn't mean it is actually good. Case in point would be the music industry; many people are making millions but their songs are mostly crap. Avatar was literally a blockbuster hit, but the plot and character development were nothing compared to those of The Dark Knight or Inception.
Same happens with the iPhone. As Apple is an undisputed master at marketing and hype, it could sell anything slapped with its company brand on it no problem. These recent iFads claim to be revolutionary, when most of their technologies are already existent on other devices. Rabid fanboys also contribute to the success of the iPhone, especially when they're so blinded by brand prestige and adherence to the status quo.
It doesn't mean that Apple products are that bad, but there are many other alternatives that could match or outperform for cheap. The iPhone is not the "best phone ever", not even by a long shot.

Tweaking phones are for amateurs, p... moreSo let me get this straight: you are basically saying that a consumer has no right to use his product to its full potential, is that it? It is already established that Jailbreaking, Rooting and changing system files on any platform of choice (be it mobile or desktop) as well as physical tweaks (such as aftermarket upgrades) are legal. Do we not have our freedom to do anything we wish to our phones?
And you cannot easily say that these tweaks do more harm than good. More often than not, freelance developers do a better job in making custom firmwares than the original manufacturers themselves. That's a good thing. If people are unsatisfactory with how an original software operates, then they could turn to 3rd-party devs for the job. This shows the beauty of Android; if you don't want something, you could either change it or remove it altogether.
Go ahead and argue that the immense community of mods and patches on any software is doing nothing but harm to the vanilla versions. They're doing the opposite, trying to get as much as they can by squeezing out every bit of potential from such applications. That's why we have custom themes for Windows and Firefox, mods and configs for video games, and so on. Are these illegal? No. Sometimes even the original devs support such modifications.

When the first Windows OS v1.0 came out from Microsoft in 1985 it was a joke. Buggy, ugly and slow.
At the time Macintosh had a real "windows" interface with a mouse and all, fully operational and usable. Top of the line, way and beyond anything MS had going. By 1992 MS had rolled out Windows 3.1x and the Apple advantage was slim, by 1995 Windows 95 were sold and a year later Apple went almost bankrupt.
Apple was running on borrowed time even from the late 80s but all the Apple fans were bragging about their superior machines and the userfriendlines of Macintosh, everybody loved the Mac but strangely everyone bought PCs.
From 1985 to 1992 its 7 years time. I doubt in this century Apple has this much time. History will repeat itself only faster and the main reason for this is the same it was in the 90s....the Apple$Greed$.

What happens if restrictions aren't enforced in city streets? There's chaos, traffic jams, accidents, pedestrians getting hit by cars, etc. But when traffic restrictions are enforced and practiced, there's less accidents, and traffic flows much more smoother. With that said. Are restrictions bad? No they're not. They're there to benefit everyone so there can be peace and order. And that is what Apple restrictions are there for. So they can provide better services, and to make sure that your device is running smoothly. How can a technician troubleshoot a tampered device effectively when you've done all sorts of tweaking with the device's settings? Hence, you lose your warranty when you tamper with a device. This was one of our case subjects in our Laws of Obligations and Contracts in college. What has your school taught you?

So you cannot say that we are letting ourselves be ripped off by buying the iphone. There is a high demand for the iphone, therefore Apple can demand a high price for it. Didn't your Economics class teacher teach you anything about the very basic laws of supply and demand?

Although there have been several news articles stating that Apple is the largest tech company.

What do you mean by "sluggish" UI? Hell my Android is very fast and fluid even with all the apps running in the background, and it intelligently underclocks to conserve battery usage.

169 comments, actually it's pretty obvious why the data shown apple is loosing shares because of global financial that hit the world. people don't have enough or rather they want to save money for more important use. thats why they can't afford to buy the money for an iPhone. if perhaps apple manufacture more iPhone 2g (which is better than the latest mobile phone of other brand) smart people will still buy that. it's the only way to save apple's market share. many people where are just sour-graping because they can't afford to buy one and many are brainwashed by the marketing to buy the sluggish UI of android which is very hassle to use in everyday life. people wake up your being brain wash

Samsung is the only company that manage to earn more than apple but they do not do so by reaping off from their customers, they have a balance between responsibility to their shareholders and to their customers. They sell by volume.
I would suggest to you, write a 1million dollar cheque to apple and donate to them, i'm sure you will become the happiest man in the world because you are happy to donate money to apple. :)

Using the ADB function, you can basically remove unwanted applications, even those tied in into the system.
And by the way, custom ROM's easily defeat the network-locked firmwares you are complaining about. Simple.

Anonymous, 11 Sep 2010So how come Apple is making so much MONEY from their "... moreSame thing happened before the Big Decline of the 80's. Apple they said has a nice big fat profit margin, they sell fewer but earn big, and then they sold even fewer and then they almost went bankrupt.
Nokia once upon a time was the biggest and most profitable and this time was only a couple of years ago. In today's world innovation and design are copied fast enough to not count so much as they did in the 80's.
Soon it will be a game of numbers and lowest cost.
Couple of years ago iPod was by far the best mp3 player. Nowadays it sells because of brand name and hype, it is no longer the best. You might say that Apple prefers that way to sell more iPhones, well it might be so but it's losing the battle fast, iPhone is no longer above and beyond anything else. AppStore appears to be above and beyond but wait a couple of years and the huge number of alternative OSs will push the developers to NotAppleStore.
With every new lock and proprietary hardware and software Apple is digging its grave once again. They have a too big of an idea of the services they provide and how much money they should charge people for them.
Best thing that happened to them is Jailbreak, they would have lost the game in 2009. Now because of "illegal" engineering they got a couple of years more. Just my 2c. (And I was a Macintosh user in the 80s, and an iPod buyer in the 90s.... boy! I am old)

Apple is worth more than IBM, more than Microsoft, more than Google, HP, Dell etc, so who won again?
I'm sure Apple don't really care they are making more money from iPhones than almost all the other phone makers put together, they have paid a billion dollars to App store developers in the last two years, no other company can come anywhere near matching that.
It's why Apple's App store has the most and the best Apps.

Androids openness is for phone makers and networks so they can add their crap, just like Symbian and WinMo, openness is a myth to suck in consumers.
Apple phones have ZERO phone network crap, no logo's, no loading screens or wallpapers, no stupid applications locked to network provided services.

However, rooting an Android phone will basically open it up for devs to mess with, giving them practically more freedom.
