Nokia N8 gets lots of stick in early reviews, we wonder why

N97 and N97 mini only had 128 mb ram and that definetly was not enough. 256 mb ram on N8 will not be enough either because even if both Symbian and Android are fully capable to run on this low ram the problem is that not all apps or programs can do the same. For being Nokias latest "flagship" 256 mb ram seem "cheap", and that is the same with the small battery only 1200 mAh because one of the biggest problems with Nokia-phones have always been that their small batteries never made them really "mobile" phones. Nokia needs to comeback and compete against the Androidleaders so why not give larger ram and battery when Nokia must know that ram and battery has been Nokia-users biggest problem, does Nolkia not listen to their customers at all?

You are 100% right in what you said there, one has to be fair in making their review specially if they are talking to the general public and this is should be part of the industry ethics. I've always liked GSMARENA reviews, fair and comprehinsive. we shall wait for your N8 review soon.

i've tried using n86's gps navigation while driving and listening to songs from n86's music player via n86's fm transmitter to my car audio system. on top of that, i still get calls.

It's inevitable that you will have some idiot that is too biased to split the justice, I can give my opinion based on my experiences with mobile phones and I can safely say that Nokia and Sony Ericsson will always be on my list over any other mobile manufacturer. I've used black berry, apple, samsung and lg and they are just not up to par. Whatever dirt they have to say about the N8 will NOT change my perception of Nokia!

Anonymous, 04 Oct 2010not to start an argument but, whats wrong with the ability ... moreThere's nothing wrong with an os that a 6yr old can use. I just dont like the idea that everyone can pick up my phone and use it, or see every app i've installed by one tap. Symbian allows me to move apps into folders that people wouldn't expect without having to jailbreak/root. I find symbian very intuitive. If you need bluetooth, head to connectivity folder. Makes sense, doesnt it? If you need a setting, just press 'options' once in that menu. It's as simple as. All the folders and apps can also be arranged whichever way the person likes

N8 has to be compared with all the competing phones on the market today, and that leeds to the conclusion that N8 is a failiure because Symbian simply can not compete with Android. N8 has a good, but not perfect or even best, camera, and it has a perfekt signalquality and gps, but other than this M8 fails completely to impress. USB on-the-go is completely pointless because the small screen resolution makes it very unpleasant to watch movies on the N8-screen, and editing office-documents is almost impossible on this low resolution and the onscreen-qwerty takes up almost all of the already to few pixels when editing. To have qwerty only in landscape is not ok today. N8 can not connect using DLNA so using N8 as a movieplayer is pointless so it makes no sence to move movies to the N8 to then play it on the TV. USB on-the-go is only marketing gimmick so that Nokia can say that they have invented something new and unique that only N8 can do today, even though USB on-the-go is pointless and not anything users really need today. Only 360x640 is not acceptable on the "flagship" from the biggets company, and the problem is the outdated Symbian that simply cannot handle larger resolution. Why did not N9000 or why will not any MeeGo-phone get 360x640 if it really is so "perfect" resolution for mobilephones as Nolkia-fans say when trying to defend N8?
GSMarena has never dared critizise any of the top brand "flagships" so their review can not be taken seriosly and you can never base your desiscion to buy a phone on a review from GSMarena alone.
N97 and N97 mini were complete failiures, but even they have loyal "believers" who think their phones are perfect, and if you never ever have used anything else than Nokia Symbian-phones then you will be very satisfied with N8, but Symbian can not compete against Android. Symbian can get you "from a to b" but it will not be a pleasant "drive", just as a Vaz Lada from 1970 can get you from a to b but the travel will not be as pleasant as in a brand new BMW.

From what i've seen so far symbian^3 doesn't really look different from symbian^1 actually symbian^3 is what symbian^1 should have been at first place, just like what nokia promised that this new os will offer what users should've got when they bought the nokia 5800. The only thing that troubles me is its usabillity...it doesn't look any different from the previous touch os just same complicated menus and settings...not promising at all

How can a 6yo not understand that a menu button takes you to the menu? The apps folder takes you to your apps while the settings folder takes you to the settings. You'd have to be blind for the UI to be unintuitive.

"Or are we the ones in the wrong? Feel free to share your opinion on the matter in the comments section below. "
i don't think you're in the wrong. as a matter of fact, i think you're a hundred percent right. and fair as well.
the number of people commenting negatively about this phone (and nokia) without good bases for the said negative comments makes me somewhat think all other manufacturers are conspiring against the Finnish company. that they're like ganging up on it. if they were, i would not really be surprised, after all it's like Nokia against all other manufacturers right now.

Anonymous, 04 Oct 2010Name a few functions that you were unable to 'use well or a... moreon my n86 it was forgivable, the music player lagged, but i figure fine, its ok, so long as it works.
but then it would just shut down if i start running 2-3 more apps in the background. that pretty much killed the multitasking functionality for the phone since it froze or just restarted, or had memory issues. if i dont listen to music i can run several apps at a time, but then the entire phone just gets too slow for any sort of enjoyable usage.
i used an n97 briefly and my god...forget about multitasking on that thing while on the browser lol, my phone froze, restarted and got memory issues way too many times for me to want to keep using nokia.
it really isnt much, but since the things i use on a daily basis cause the phone to stop doing it was supposed to do, then i have to say that the phone is not capable of keeping up with its own functionality.
all this could have been corrected a while ago if nokia did not insist on playing on their ego trip to promote under-powered phones. and now with the n8 out in the wild, it has the specs of a late 2008, early 2009 model....
