That 5℅ may not seem much against income but when you will compare that against profit it will surely break Samsung's heart. That 1 billion $ will be a loss of profit as note 7 is the most profitable unit they can sell today and we are not even talking about long term effect of this fiasco.

samsung may have had a huge lost and setback but they have just prove how great thet are towards the customer care by replacing every single unit of the note 7.. something i dont think any smartphone manufacturer is willing to take..respect samsung loyalty

I have no empathy for Samsung in this.
It has greatly alienated long-time Note users,
with its Note 5 (no microsd, non-removable battery),
and now with Note 7:
- inflated 850 EUR price
- unwanted curved screen (with no flat screen option)
- mediocre specs with 4GB RAM,
- non-removable battery (now it is an issue)
- screen that scratches easily
etc.
perhaps they should listen to their customers, and price their products more reasonably.

Replaceable battery could have prevented this heartbreak. Could be a blessing for people who have argued for this. S6 onwards has been very difficult to take apart for even simple battery replacement.

If Samsung themselves supply 70% ... moreWell, since they did not do the recall in China by saying all the phones going there had batteries supplied by the other producer (Maybe Chinese supplier), I think there can not be any other issue with the phone. I see one other possibility: No matter how much this move is going to cost Samsung, they can guarantee themselves against future legal actions by people claiming the phone has put their houses in fire. Because one has no excuse for not returning the phone, when the recall simply states all the phones should be returned.

I think the insurance is covering the cost, and they are trying to get good publicity by showing good will (replacing all the units). I have never heard an OEM replacing 2.5 million units, when there have been 35 reports, and the chance is 24 in 1 million units.

If the battery was worth $20 to produce, and it would cost them on average $10 to get it to a person, the whole exercise would cost them only $75 million. Now we're looking at over 10 times as much, because they need to get the device delivered and have people working day and night to open every single phone and replace the battery, and replacing the whole phones which won't survive the procedure.
Funny how in the end, the ones burned the worst from non-replaceable batteries were not the consumers but Samsung themselves.

If Samsung themselves supply 70% of the batteries and only 30% are by 3rd-parties, then why would they recall 100% of phones if the fault is just with one manufacturer? It's not like recalls like this are cheap you know!
Either:
1) The faulty manufacturer is actually Samsung (70%), thus by recalling all phones and omitting the manufacturer they are in a "save face" operation.
2) The problem is actually somewhere else, probably the charging circuit in the logic-board (thus it may affect 100% of phones and this is the best "save face" operation for that fault).
3) Because it's a new model (thus only a few units were actually sold) they are doing a "charm" operation that is expensive at first, but will ease the minds of consumers by ensuring no defective phones are left in the market (which could actually turn-out to be least expensive).
4) They are so poorly organized they don't know which phone has which battery (which would be amazing, by all the wrong reasons).

Just saying...if your phones supported removable batteries, then this would be an easier & miniscule financial exercise....factor that thought into your galaxy s8 equation.

2016 is a nightmare year for Samsung.A big lesson to them.
Only can safe them ,they just need to reduce their galaxy phone price by
30-40% to gain back customer confidence.
Stop being arrogant company.

Good move by samsung. Seeing as they prioritize customers than money then il be going out for samsung all the way. Im now a samsung fan. Im still sticking to my note 7. Im Replacing it cuz theres a small scratch and i abused it so badly and overnight charge. Lol Best phone high end in the world!
