It's a marketing gimmick, there are no FREE lunches, you have to pay for using the toilet....
similarly even the voice calls are free, you end up paying for the data consumed... Kindly note, calls over VoLTE are routed through data frequency, hence it is very challenging to meter the voice calls, which gets passed through the system as data usage.... Hence it's no brainier to say voice calls are free, however the data it consumes shall be charged... Ambani's again gulling Indians...

With Whatsapp, WeChat and Viber offering high-quality VoIP, there should be no need for "native" calls in the future. If you need to call a landline or 2g/3g device, then deal with the charges, but between family and friends I don't see what the fuss is all about...

I was a part of this activity when it was happening, lockedLTE is not a new thing I am a EVDO(Lockheed/RAM GSM) user and I like to warn you as ex-RIM user it didn't turned out same like their petroleum products,... they can't make it happen bcos of less BUYERs and later they ll find an excuse saying Govt. is no giving reasonable subsidies!...Ha..my BSNL 3G network was faster than an JIO phone in a recent test and would also add that my 4gAirtel is at least 10times as fast as my BSNL 3G however wireless LTE is twice as fast. 13mbps at 9pm.

Not only is Jio no longer in testing phase (having registered plans with TRAI, and started MNP), but even during testing (earlier) they had to pay.

Shiva, 05 Sep 2016Voice call will be absolutely free to any network std/ loca... moreOnly for now (in the test phase as they dont have to pay interconnect charges foe calls to other networks). Jio would have to pay 14p per minute post 31st dec as interconnect charges. This is as per TRAI regulations
A section of the media is claiming that even after 31st dec, jio would not be passing on this 14p per minute charge to the customer. I, however, doubt this

Jio = Free Voice?
Existing telecom players are saying that Jio is a packet switching network and will charge for data used during voice calls. I decided to find out if there was any truth to their claims, afterall they have been charging us high rates for so many years.
The TRUTH NOW -
If you go through the announced tariff details you will notice that jio will NOT charge you for the data consumed for voice calls. In fact jio will also not charge you if you place calls to other operators even though Jio has to pay them interconnect charges.
Further, all calls made across the country including STD calls, are FREE.
Older operators have to maintain two different sets of infrastructure..packet switched for data and circuit switched for voice.. Jio has just one packet switched network for both voice and data.. plus in true reliance style they have bet on the following:
a. Better technology which is spectrally more efficient..meaning they can transmit more data per unit energy consumed.
b. Data consumption in India is going to go through the roof..hence built the largest capacity upfront which brings down cost per GB for consumers.
c. Being a Greenfield operator with no legacy investment in circuit switched infra, only they can do the above. If other operators try it, they will have to take a loss on their existing voice business.
So Jio voice (within India) is truly free..no catches!!!

Reliance Jio - "The excitement was marred for many with SIM cards going out of stock and technical glitches which hampered the activation process." Quoted text of New Delhi experience from ET news website.
Youtube video of similar experience in Mumbai. I live in Ahmedabad and I tried several shops, SIM is not available since 2-3 days and they have no idea when SIM will be available.
5 figure crore investment, Modi Ji, Super hyped 5th Sept. launch press conference and what not. And at the end of the day SIM is not available.
Somebody should dig out truth of this nationwide launch fiasco.
