Nokia handsets do not come with all web standards out of the box. For example, Flash 10.

Regarding this comment, a Nokia N900 can doo all of your listed features. This (mobile computer) runs on Maemo 5 (Linux).

(7) File transfer and stereo audio via bluetooth. This is a basic function!
(8) Proper file manager on the handset itself
(9) The ability to install software from whatever source I choose (ie no dependence on "store" or "market")

I advocate Symbian as superior, but I can't speak for VPN or RDM - I've no use for either of those functions. On the subject of Symbian being a nerd-friendly system, I did find this page amusing (caution: he's deliberately over-the-top, so take with a grain of salt): www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=iphone.
The way I see it all but the cheapest of modern mobile phones are convergence devices - some more than others, but most can serve as phone, PDA (calendar, contacts, notes), music player, GPS unit and alarm clock.
To succeed at this, I require that the device performs each of those functions in a satisfactory way: there are certain expectations I have of a phone, PDA, GPS unit or media player.
I've used Symbian, iOS, Android and earlier versions of WinMo - and of the lot only the Nokia and SE handsets running Symbian have met my expectations.
I don't know if this is entirely attributable to the OS alone - we won't know 'till Nokia's next non-Symbian system.
Some specific examples:
(1) I expect that my GPS will have maps preloaded, and that I will be able to navigate without having to be online. Why should I be required to broadcast my location to the network just to get from A to B?
(2) I expect that my media player will support drag-and-drop from within Windows Explorer, standard media libraries such as WMP and Winamp, and combine files from internal/removable storage into one library.
(3) I expect my PDA to have usable and accessable calendar/contact features, and that there is an easy way to back up and restore my contacts, notes, messages and calendar.
(4) I expect my phone to send and recieve calls and messages flawlessly, with full support for SMS, MMS and video calling.
(5) I expect a real convergence device to make an attempt to draw relevant features together. For instance, being able to immediately locate a given Contact on the GPS map, using only the Contact's address details.
(6) I expect my portable web browser to support accepted web standards for multimedia to the extent that the hardware is capable.
Many of these criteria are satisfied by the most modern of Android phones, and iOS is *still* playing catchup. But AFAIK only Nokia handsets are capable of all of the above in their "out-of-the-box" state. *installation on sd cards (now available on android finally through froyo)
*usb-otg is a symbian feature i guess
*proper file manager
*native java support
*100% user themeable
*flash support (vs. Ios)
*sending files through bluetooth (vs. Ios)
*no fragmentation
*symmetric multi-processing
*and many more things i'm not aware off because i hardly use it(video call, tethering, hdmi)
lets say symbian is already functionally complete. The only thing that lacks in symbian is usability, which is the most important thing by today's smartphone standards. These updates are trying to fix those issues.

What??? Retired because of Nokia??? In the first place, the N8 had to be released with this new browser but as happened with the N97, Nokia is launching its devices almost in beta stages.
I really want to believe in you again Nokia!!! I really do.

If it costs over 500 Euro in Greece you are being ripped off. By the way Ireland is an expensive country so if its about 420 here it should be nowhere near 500 in Greece.

me, 28 Oct 2010A release date for this should be made official. A lot of p... moreIf you are more interested about some release date than the phone itself, then you really should buy something else. Browser is just one part of the N8. There is so much more that N8 has. I'm a lot more interested in all the other great features that N8 has that the other phones don't have. And there are a lot of them. And I know I'm getting updates all the time from Nokia, unlike the case is with Samsung or some other Android manufacturers. Samsungs update policy seems to be: Avoid Making Updates.
I know the new browser is coming. That's enough for me. Besides, the current browser is usable. And I can always use Opera (or some other browser) if needed.

I still believe in Nokia, and i love my N8.
I dont like IOs that has internet browser uncapable of playing flash videos, its only the NAME that apple made famous for. Android, haven't any back ground.
Why Nokia? Because Nokia still have the ease of use, and user friendly features that Samsung can't beat no matter what OS they use. N8 is a perfect device for me, still need to be polished but i know nokia won't fail with the avid users of their mobiles...
