Nokia N8 gets severely tortured, lives to tell the story

11 November, 2010
A unibody anodized aluminum chassis and a reinforced glass over the panel make the Nokia N8 certainly look like one of the sturdiest smartphones around. And the Finnish company is keen to show just how...

I was already on the street when I realized I forgot my Samsung Wave upstairs. So I asked my friend to throw it down to me from the balcony. He did but he threw it too far from me. The phone fell on the hard tarred street. I picked up and it was working perfectly. This is what I call "Severely tortured" test and not the cushioned merry-go-round test of the Nokia N8. The video itself makes a mockery of the said test.

Hmm, nice to see, but flawed by the design of the testing apparatus. The rotation of the box allows the phone to slide slightly before dropping. To test it properly, it should be dropped straight from the top of the box to the bottom. In addition, the box looks to be made from sheet steel or aluminium which will naturally allow a little 'give' when something is dropped on it. A truer test would be to have the phones dropped repeatedly onto a slab of concrete from 3 or 4 feet, but I'm guessing they wouldn't last long.

One of the main reasons I stick to Nokias is I've never had one break. My 6230i and n82 both still going strong after being dropped, stepped on, splashed etc. countless times. Everyone I know who's had an iphone has at some point had a problem with the screen dying.

N8 will be my next touchscreen phone, this being one of the reasons. Oh and I can't wait to put some HD movies on it and watch them on my TV :) No more DVDs!!

Also fell off the dashboard holder one time and flew across the car as i went round the corner a little too fast
                      still in one piece

yeah, sturdy all right, i've already did that on my X10, I also accidentally drop it in a mud, and also on tarmac, and still working fine, my point is, a phone should design to witstand drops, because of everyday life, what's the point of having a phone if it turns to a thousand pieces if you accidentally drop it 4 or 5 feet in height? im not talking iphone 4 here,,

Well done Nokia for the rock solid smartphones you have that no other company has.

and for those who want only reviews and news about their brand phones, you can leave GSMArena and go to their dedicated websites.

GSMArena is a general news and review tech site for ALL SMARTPHONES, take it or leave it.

[deleted post]for ages it felt like I was reading nothing but Samsung, SE and HTC reviews on GSMA. Then Nokia releases what feels like 10 phones all at once, and waddayaknow - GSMA has articles and news on each one of them.

Get over yourself. GSMA is just reporting the news as it happens. If other manufacturers had anything remotely interesting going on, that'd be posted too. Oh, hang on - it *is* being posted! On the front page I see six articles about HTC, one for Dell, a bunch of Android news, four Samsung articles, LG, SE ... anyone doing anything worth reporting in recent times is represented there. If GSMA were really biased, they'd probably have SEE2010 splashed all over the front page but they know that other sites have that covered and they stick to what they do best.

The video was very short, so it's hard to tell anything for certain just from that. Believe what you want! :--D

However, if we assume that they are telling the truth in that video then they performed this test "over and over" again, each time leaving the phones in that tumbling machine for two minutes.

I'd like to see how other handsets would take that kind of punishments. iPhone was shown to be pretty tough when it was first launched - any Macolytes want to post their own personal drop-test video? Or know of a video showing a similar testing procedure?
