The most annoying thing about people is that they never do their homework and research well before buying their products and then they keep complaining like children. Please grow up and have responsibility for your actions.
Don't expect to buy a samsung or LG and get regular updates, don't expect to buy an iphone without suffering from apple's restrictions. Likewise, don't expect to buy an HTC phone and have the same camera and music quality similar to a SE handset. Just do your homework and know exactly what you want and whats your exact needs, and I promise you that you will be much more happy and satisfied.
Hint: Apply this to everything in life not only phones. For example, don't fall in love with a bi*ch and expect her to be faithful!

The only reason we rely on manufacturers and carriers for updates is because they insist on saddling our phones with their garbage UI tweaks and branded crapware apps.
And even if they were kind of enough to load plain-old android onto our phones, there currently isn't a channel for us non-developers to update our own phones with the most recent version of android because Google is in bed with both manufacturers and carriers. Simply put... THERE IS NO WAY TO GET AN ANDROID UPDATE EXCEPT THROUGH YOUR CARRIER.
But then again, that's the whole point. Samsung, Google and (insert your carrier here) all know that if you can't update your old phone to the newest version of android, you're likely to buy a whole new phone.
We as consumers need to start rewarding companies that don't do business this way.

Adam, 10 Dec 2010 Guys trust me I feel your pain and anger, I used to be an... more+1 Adam I have Samsung blacklisted after I sell this computer I got from them. When Windows 7 come out I didn't get my DVD until 6 months after. Apparently it got lost in the mail yet it had a tracking number stuck on it when I got it.

The only reason samsung made the Nexus S is because they know they will never upgrade the Galaxy S. Some may argue that these cases is different and separate but their not.
Gingerbread will be coming in newer phones from samsung, so forget all the support and updates for your older mobiles.
Hint: remember when one of a sudden samsung ditched symbian and closed all the support forums for symbian users? Be aware you may be next folks, as all of us know that samsung are working on their new os Bada. Just think ahead in order for you not to be shocked in the future.

Let's not forget that updating a phone to android 2.2 (even from 2.1) actually boosts said phone's performance SIGNIFICANTLY regardless of whether it's sporting a high or low end processor.
I find it impossible to believe that a 2.2 to 2.3 upgrade would undo those gains. I find it just as hard to believe that a 2.3 upgrade would do anything other than further increase phone performance (2.3 represents a collection of tweaks, after all, not an entirely new OS).
I've owned a Samsung Galaxy S (Bell Vibrant) for two months now, and other than the agonizing wait for froyo, I love the phone. However, I can promise Samsung this... if they choose not to release a gingerbread upgrade for it, it will most definitely be the last Samsung phone I ever purchase.
This is what happens when phone makers insist on integrating their crap software with an already great OS.

Is it right to expet OEMS to always give you the latest update for free. If you buy a computer from dell that comes with vista, you dont expect them to send ypu a copy of windows 7 when it comes out. You do expect a few service packs and bug fixes which is what 2.2 delivered. Other thatn that I dont expect the OEMs to provide new updates. The are in the right to deliver gingerbread when they release new handsets, as it means that they dont canabalise their new relseases by providing updates.
2.2 fixed the problems with the galaxy and i am happy and thats all that should really be expected. My view is probably different from those who think they should automatically get the updates but you need to be realistic. the manufacturers do need to make money with new phones. Another possibility is to pay for upgrades which i wouldn't mind, as long as they come out in a timely manner.

it's all about manufacturer support and service now. You guys can argue forever which OS is better but it's not about that. If you want after sales support, go with a reputable manufacturer that has a good record.

Guys trust me I feel your pain and anger, I used to be an samsung omnia HD owner due to their great technology, but I have been slapped in the face because of samsung's dirty policy, welcome to samsung's world my friends.
Samsung = sales only, no updates, no supports, no nothing. And trust me I'm amazed that the galaxy s got Froyo, but 2.3 ?! That's not going to happen, you have my word on this.
If you want the fastest updates than HTC is your best choice. If looks and style is what your looking for and you don't mind getting slower updates that SE are not that bad.
However, if you don't care about updates like at all! And all you want is great technology than samsung is the way to go, but never own a samsung and complain about updates, because trust me it makes you look foolish and it shows you have no idea about samsung's policy.

Screw all the manufactures. I think eventually the Mobile committee will come out with a way to update these phones. Won't be official but better than nothing.

i dunno what made me get the galaxy S in the first place, now i'm stuck with a manufacturer who doesn't give a rat's ass about its customers. the pc software kies is a joke, they only released the froyo update not b'cos they wanted to but b'cos they didnt want the negative press/bashing from customers.. now with gingerbread only God knows what they're goin to say.. nexus S isn't that much different from the galaxy s spec wise.. i might just end up trading in my galaxy S for something else and i promise samsung if that happens i'll do all my possible best to prevent ppl i knw from buying ANY of your products.. punks!

why this much 2gb rom is required is sgs..other have 512mb rom with froyo 2.2... must upgrade to 2.3 ....

It's ridiculous to say that the hardware of the Galaxy S may not support the Android 2.3! It's just the most powerfull hardware among Android phones out there! Don't say such a bullshit, Samsung!
And I support the idea of someone that said the biggest problem to Android is this decentralization in distributing updates! This should come from Google and not from Samsung, Sony Ericsson, etc...
I will update my SGS as long the hardware supports it! With non official roms or what else! And I know that we have a lot of updates that should still run on this little beast smooth as cream!

Gingerbread's gonna run on high-end LG and Samsung phones, I'm sure. If the manufacturers won't give us the update, 3rd-party devs will surely be able to solve the problem and port 2.3 to these phones in the phone of custom ROMs. Remember what happened to the WM 6.5 running HTC HD2? It now runs on Froyo, Windows Phone 7 and even Linux builds. Same could happen for the Galaxy S line and the like.
