Obviously this has nothing to do with technical requirements. If you've ever worked at a phone manufacturer's you know there is way more at stake than satisfying customers. The most important thing is not to get any stock left in any retail channels once a product is out and that quantities are commited. Considering all the marketing, and various carriers who offer different versions of the Galaxy S, Samsung has definitely forecasted lots of Galaxy S productions. Many of those units are finished or soon to be on the production lines. In that case, you really do not want to make an announcement that is going to slow down sales in any way. The wrong move would be to say "sure, Galaxy S is getting the update", and take that say back in the end, cause trust in Samsung would evaporate like instantly. On the other hand, most of the users have no idea the work it is to port everything on to the next android version... imagine that work has to be done on every single version of the Galaxy S: Verizon, At&T, Vodaphone, etc. It's a hell of a job to do. If they can avoid it, they will. To be continued.

Avoid Samsung phones like plague, i had the samsung wave which was terrible bad, i replaced with the Nokia e5 and couldn't be more happier

I want my Galaxy S to get updates for as long as the hardware can take it. The iPhone 3G is still receiving updates even after more than 2 years after its release. The Galaxy S isn't even out for a year.

I on the other hand want the latest technology, which includes the latest firmware on my phones. The Galaxy S is capable of 2.3 and probably 2.4 (unless there are huge system requirements) so the latest firmware should be pushed onto that phone until the hardware is technically not able to run the software at a decent speed.

Is 2.3 really that much better than 2.2? 2.2 gave us Flash 10.1 but exactly what will 2.3 give us, besides some minor speed improvements and a little bit longer batterylife? Thera is a big difference between 2.1 and 2.2, but I can not se the same big difference between 2.2 and 2.3 so I do not really care if my Galaxy S get 2.3 or not because 2.2 works just perfect.

This type of fragmentation crap is exactly what's harming Androids image.
Phones like the Galaxy S (possibly) not getting the latest firmware because the manufacturers don't want to release it on the phone. It's currently one of the highest-tech phones out there and still might not get the update. That's absurd.
If Samsung are so concerned about sales, then they shold probably figure that their customers don't like waiting for firmware updates, and they certainly don't like being denied firmware. Next phone I'll get HTC or something that always push updates on their phones.
Or hell, I'll just go ahead and get the next iPhone. At least I know I'll be treated as equal and will get the latest firmware when everyone else gets it.

Honestly the state of smartfones today is embarrassing,most have crap components made on the cheap..They are all crud.

i see it hard for 600mhz phones to get a gingerbread update... It took so long to put Froyo on phones like Htc Legend so i really can't imagine a Gingerbread on this kind of phones. that's it.

Actually their not being lazy, but samsung cares about business more than customers. So, it's either updates to 2.3 and satisfy all their current users and risk selling their new flagship in the future. Or it's either release a new flagship that will attract many new buyers and gain more profit, even though it means risking the old customers satisfaction.
It seems many of you are new to samsung, have you ever heard about omnia 2 and omnia HD? Just ask the users did they ever get an update? And even if they did when was it after one year!

I said this yesterday in case no one listened. The only reason samsung made the nexus s is because they will never upgrade their sgs to 2.3, so just suck it samsung users, the same way I did with the omnia HD.
Yes samsung provides us with great technology but in the same time their support is just terrible. So don't you dare complain about this, because samsung's policy is clear, they are busy making new phones, they don't have anytime for updating anything.
It's you the customers who bought such thing.

Nexus S and Galaxy S share pretty much exactly the same hardware. I think they're just being lazy and don't want to push the new firmware.
I really hope it goes through, Even though we'll get it like a week or two before 2.4 is released....

Latest according to engadget Lg is upgrading the optimus series to 2.3, Samsung Indian Division has confirmed upgrade to 2.3 for S series handset.
