Smartphones have always been based on gimmicky trends. Anytime users here visit this website or anything related to smartphones, you are already inside their pockets. Planned obsolescence fashion accessory devices when the mobile internet experience is far inferior to the desktop/laptop one. The only product from Apple built to last are Macs. I know people still on Snow Leopard or using a MacBook from 8 years ago. Smartphones especially iPhones are all gimmicks. You end up paying more for a smartphone for it to only last 2-3 years when a laptop/notebook can last half a decade minimum.

Issue is due to apple's bad design and component placements in the circuit.
They take 4 months to acknowledge the issue.
And they want users to pay $150 to fix the issue.
If you don't call this company greedy .. m not sure what else to call it and how some fans would defend this company after all this.
          SHAME !!!!!

I have repaired DOZENS of these, and the issue is indeed linked to deformation of the frame (i.e., bending), which actually CAN come from the stress and movements while in a pocket, AND NOT EXCLUSIVELY FROM DROPPING/IMPACT as Apple has suggested. The touch IC is made by Broadcomm, and the MAIN reason it becomes separated from the logic board is due to no shielding above that grouping of components, thereby making stress on the phone's frame transfer to the logic board, and as a result, the BGA (ball grid array) becomes stressed and the balls can crack/separate. Sometimes a simple reflow will fix it, but the best way to "future-proof" any further issue is to remove the Broadcomm touch controller IC, re-ball it, and then re-seat it, THEN put a makeshift shield over the components. The frame is already there, so a simple thin metal sheet cut to the right shape will prevent your repair from coming undone due to further bending (R1 aluminium has always been my go-to).

There is a class action lawsuit, so PLEASE, if you have this problem, GET ON THE LAWSUIT!! This is clearly a design flaw that Apple is aware of, due to the fact that later generations were equipped with the shield I spoke of earlier. And anyone who doesn't think the iPhone 6 Plus bends easily is either high, or probably need to be. I repair these devices every day, it is my job, and although I have respect for Apple's devices, their business practices disgust me, and any company who refuses to admit fault needs to be taken down a peg; so PLEASE, Google 'Touch IC Disease', and jump on this lawsuit.

It's not that I don't like the money I make from fixing iDevices, it's just this specific issue isn't "user error" as Apple is claiming it to be. Component repair is time-consuming, requiring skill and experience, and that makes it more expensive than most repairs. Apple needs to step up and admit fault. This could be EASILY FIXED by Apple!! They could simply mill a shield with clips on the periphery, since the frame is already there. Then, a certified technician, such as myself, could easily install it on the back side of the logic board, thereby preventing further frame transfer stress.

            ;-)

So Apple is basically telling their users "You have to pay for a problem we've caused", wow no wonder people call them iSheep. See how Samsung handled it, if iPhones had the same issue, Apple would have probably said you're not holding it right, or you're exposing it too much to the sun, or better yet, they would sell a vest to protect yourself from it.

back to the topic at hand:
                        design flaws..everyones plagued by them
z2, z3: self cracking screen(its probably caused by the glass expanding into the metal frame)
                        iphone: multiple gates
samsung note 7: spen getting stuck and kaboom problem
lg g4: wifi antenna problem needing board replacement
asus phones: bad subboards and ghost touches
                        nokia: umm..
although in their favour when compared to apple they do release more than 2 phones at once so their efforts maybe diluted..apple doesnt have any excuse

So even though they're defective from the manufacturers's side of things, they're still gonna charge money for an issue that was caused by them in the first place?

People shouldnt have to pay for repairs for design flaws. Especially for the company that has the largest profit margin by dramatic proportions due to severe over pricing and supposedly has the best quality products and best customer care.
