microUSB to become the standard charger plug in the EU next year

30 December, 2010
As we say goodbye to 2010, the European Union says goodbye to un-standardized phone chargers. It's been over a year in the making, but microUSB will be the standard charger plug for European mobile...

I had been waiting for a while for this to happen, after having sworn that I'd never buy a phone with a proprietary connector again.

Then of course I found out that there are two mutually incompatible types of micro-usb socket, type A and type B, and while all my other devices (camera, navigator, mp3 player) use a type A micro-usb cable, LG for some reason decided to put a type B cable on my new phone... oh well, I suppose that it is still better to carry around two cables around than half a dozen ;)

Those of you that say Mini USB is stronger, read this...

                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Durability

Micro USB is rated at 10,000 insertions, Mini USB at 5000, Micro USB is more durable.

                      Great move by the EU!

micro USB is great, and when a new standard like LightPeak comes along in couple of years, they'll set a standard connector there too.

I hope Apple actually installs a port on the iPhone in addition to the 30 pin connector instead of including an adapter.

Finally!! Multiple different chargers is really nonsense but the horrific thing was/is the amount of old chargers we throw to the garbage every year. Of course we can say they are recycled but that's not 100% true. This is very good news!! About Apple, they will go along I am pretty sure.

Retarded move, because a year down the road, you will have another form of charger developed by a company that will be proprietary but might be better and more efficient. So what's the point? So many disadvantages to this, mainly, slowing down growth in charger/battery tech because companies have to abide by some non sense rule to stick to a standard instead of investing into a better technology. The older non MicroUSB chargers will goto waste and will create an even bigger dump and waste than before. Bigger overhead for companies because they need to localize chargers along with the rest of the product. No need for EU to regulate this honestly. Let the market choice dominate the field instead of some short sighted regulation. Not to say that the MicroUSB is a bad tech, but just that there is no need for EU intervention in this.

The same reason why FastPort fails big time. Headset, charger, data cable, all in a single port. It deteriorates faster. MicroUSB was designed for file transfer, not charging.
