microUSB to become the standard charger plug in the EU next year

30 December, 2010
As we say goodbye to 2010, the European Union says goodbye to un-standardized phone chargers. It's been over a year in the making, but microUSB will be the standard charger plug for European mobile...

Another stupid move by companies that should know better. Mini-USB was sturdy, fitted maybe 75% of things already available for computers, mobiles, MP3 players - you name it, it was on most of them.

The micro-USB version is weak and ready to snap off 2 minutes off the production line :( As well as sorting many other devices, I own myself a NOKIA N97 - so-called flagship mobile ? with a useless charger socket as with all N97's. It's so bad NOKIA will even fix it for free (if you go to the right place to get them to talk to you about it).

They should stop reinventing the wheel, and realise that there's nothing new needed. Pick what's most common 'today' (mini-USB) and use that as a standard. Then you've got backward compatibility over the past 6 years with no confusion over LG/SAMSUNG/NOKIA all hoping probably that the customers will break their mobile trying to plug very similar looking chargers in to phones out of warranty LoL

Hopefully. Such a standard can only achieve one thing: kill innovation. And since the techworld moves at a far greater speed than any legislation I'm worried about the future. MicroUSB will soon be obsolete. However, thanks to EUSSR, the techworld will be stuck on that standard for a long time to come.

He (jobs) will probably keep his 30 pin connector and put the micro usb port on the other end of the cable, where it connects to the adapter plugged into the wall. We all know he's never going to cut into profit margin for the sake of an 'open community'

But microUSBs have covers! Its not convenient. You have to pull out the cover in order to charge. Plus, microUSB female adaptors are so ugly and looks bulky when left opened with no lid on. Its a dirt magnet too! If charging is their problem, why dont they standardize chargers with smaller sockets like Nokia's and maybe microUSB charging will just be another feature.

I think is a good ideea, because in the future you will have NOT to search for a charger for your "old" mobile, because you will find everywhere the same standardized charger...
Until now it was a BIG problem that, the mobiles have not a standard chrger.
And the others don't have to worry, because there will be components, which will "traduce" the microUSB standard to their telephone's charger type.
This change is bad for me too, because I have an old Siemens (AF 51) which is not with this standard... But if the chrger is gone, allready my phone has served me enough... Then it will be his time to "rest" in peace :P .

for those who are using hi-tech gadget but still living inside the caves...here is (link below) the example of a USB charger (wall/car/pc/laptop) combo that doesn't need any USB port from a PC or laptop if you want to charge your gadget inside the cave. for as long a you have the direct power supply socket inside the cave...you can still enjoy your gadget inside the caves without worrying to much about how to charge your gadget even without a PC r laptop:

I would think that this would the be standard around the world. It would make sense at least from a consumers POV. The phone phone I've ever owned that didn't charge via MicroUSB was my old D900, and I think my MotoRAZR, but that ran on a USB just different size. I think when it comes to chargers the connectors should all be the same. When my D900 charger broke, I had the hardest time in the world replacing it, because Samsung changed their connectors or something and nothing ran used it anymore.
