Samsung Galaxy S8's unusual screen resolution revealed

27 January 2017
This Korean company's next flagship smartphone will have more pixels than LG's G6.

Not sure about the potential positioning of the back fingerprint scanner. Otherwise lovely design but would of prefered a narrower screen, looks a bit fat.

I know what they doing. They doing what Mi Mix did. The elongated screen to make space for on screen button and notification. So that the real screen showing all the actual content still be 16:9.

So the two S8's will likely be a similar physical size to their S7 counterparts because they are replacing much of the top/bottom bezel with more screen, but the sides remain the same.

It's a great way to say "look, bigger screen, same phone size!" but with a screen this tall I don't think it's going to be comfortable to use, especially one handed. I would have preferred a 16:9 screen with slightly reduced top/bottom bezels or 17:9 at most.

Ugh! Way too tall! Even with the buttons on screen. I think I'll passing on samsung after all this time and go for whoever offers a good phone with 17:9 or 16:9 screen and on screen buttons. Hopefully smaller bezels too but they don't have to be tiny, just around 12mm top/bottom and the same as the S7/P9/OP3 ect on the sides.

OLED and AMOLED are used in area of display. OLED is short for organic light emitting diode, and AMOLED is the short for avtive matrix organic light emitting. So, the difference shoule be the with or without active matrix. Generally, the OLED display with back panel of thin-film transistors (TFTs) is called AMOLED.

100% sure they will not do a 5,8 and a 6.2up plus model. These news are just to keep up the interest. I am confident there will br a 5 to 5.5 and one over 6,but i think they will keep the sizes. Anyways the leaked images from yesterday are fake. That phone is just photosopped or a chinese mockup. Samsung will change the design entirely of the nex S generation.

Well at 6.2 inch display,it's going to be interesting what mobile network operators in the UK make of the s8.
Most reckon that anything with a screen over 6.0 inch is a tablet and do not allow "ordinary" mobile Sims to work on devices once they report what device is attatched to their networks, you can make calls etc,but they insist that you need to use a "mobile broadband" SIM for data connection,I can see that going down well with the usual buyer of devices like the s8.
What are YOU going to do three ?
You bought this rule in years ago and haven't changed it yet as far as I can find out,my original Sammy galaxy tab was turned into a handful of junk overnight when you bought the rule in and made it a waste of time buying the nexus 7 lte.
You will now have to change that rule,as I always told you you would,it was always obvious that fairly quickly that phone screens would get to 6 inch and bigger, lots of folk like them, the Armani brigade can stick with their post tiny little skinny phones with no battery life or protection, but plenty of others love big screens,as I warned everyone years ago when I was repeatedly told it won't happen !!

Well there can be other variant of Snapdragon 821. Maybe at Mwc they will anounce four core sn821 with higher clocks. In the end we remember that while G2 had sn800 meanwhile G3 had updated soc 801. So it wouldnt be unusual. Regarding Samsung monopoly over 835...i think that it doesnt do any favour to Samsung. There is Kirin 960 which is better in raw power than Sn820 and will be probably better than 835. It means that other might ask Huawei for chips. Mediatek isnt good enough.

Impractical aspect ratio. I would have preferred if they kept 16:9, and reduced the height of the phone. Or better kept the height and made it a bit wider. Width is important for wider keyboard, and larger text to read. I do not mind a bit of scrolling. And I do not like rotating phone. And have a problem in my pocked with very long phones. I can easily hold and handle even 5.5" phone with one hand as far as width is concerned, but to reach top status line I have to use the other hand.

Take LG G3 or Moto X2 was a good trend, and then things diverged with elongated phones like HTC One, Samsung Edge series etc.

The real reason why the 7nm SoC is important is that it improves the performance of the DosBox emulators (X86 Win32 desktop PC emulator), because I want to play Soldier of Fortune 2 and Postal 2 PC games on a phone. And the DosBox emulator that runs these games requires much faster CPU.

It's a different game that has much lower system requirements than those I mentioned, yet it is sill very slow, unplayable on today's fastest phones like the Galaxy S7.

Who cares about 160 additionnal lines of pixels no one will be able to notice! All I want is a feature packed, quality device, which brings noticeable novelty. All the good sides. Like the Note 4. If Samsung plays like Apple and put again the same camera on the S8, that's going to be a dealbreaker. I have the S7, and if I pay full price +20% what I paid for the S7, shouldn't it bring new improvements in every department it can? In an useful manner, I mean.
