Forced? It comes with the iPhone 7 and doesn't cost anything

Bullshit.
Will never happen. Apple needs the royalties from all those lightning sales.
Apple is designed to be a closed ecosystem, Steve Jobs spelled it out publicly and clearly.
Will Never happen.

Every all of us know that true die hard iPhone fans will find this very innovative and good-move. Despite every bit penny they spent on soon-become-obsolete accessories, this move is still considered good in their eyes. maybe most of commenter about "bad move, slaps of tools and jack, etc" are sentiment android or non iphone user who feel sorry for those who are proud to be deceived. Well, Apple is indeed a success company.

Bullshit. This is the same as believing that Apple will release completely bezeless iPhone for the anniversary.

I started reading until I saw "wall street journal" and now I don't believe anything that they've said, iphone 8 will probs come out with the 40 pin connector again with the reliability of their leaks

Motorola got rid of them, HTC is getting rid of them , samsung is getting rid of them on the s8, LeEco LeTV has gotten rid of it for a while now (longer than apple did). ....

Seems very unlikely. They get a bunch of money from third parties making accessories for the devices when they are all forced to pay licensing fees for using the proprietary connection.
It would definitely be better for everyone but Apple to have a USB-C port instead tho.

A rare outbreak of common sense at Apple. Although at $1000 (and probably almost £1000 here in the UK) I see that the common sense hasn't extended to include their comedy pricing :(

Next on "iPhone turns generic with Tim Cook": Dual SIM, 8 Gigs of RAM, Snapdragon 835 and expandable storage.

Huge screen sized borderless phablet, with an AMOLED screen, and a USB-C port? Thanks, I'll just get a Xiaomi or something for half the cost. Apple used to be unique (ish) in their way. No more.

Junker12315, 28 Feb 2017I would laugh really hard if they did this, also what about... moreI know right. They get rid of the earjack and forced people to buy lightning dongle. Now, they get rid of lightning port and forced people go buy usb c dongle. Lack of consistency. Great move. Keep this up and more people will leave Apple. Even android dont want to play 'getting-rid-of-audio-jack' move.

That's a clever move by Apple. Market will adopt USB type C. With the removal of 3.5 mm headphone jack if they would stick to lightening port, it'll be a hard time for them when headphone manufacturers will go the type C way.
