Apple iPhone 8 may have a USB-C port instead of Lightning

WSJ reports that Apple will ditch their proprietary Lightning port in favor of USB-C on the next iPhone.

I don't care about what iPhone does with their phones cuz i'm never gonna buy one. I want android OEMs like Samsung and LG to keep it. It doesn't make sense to remove 3.5 mm jack until there is a better solution available. I would like them to wait till wireless audio becomes cheaper and better.

    This is unlike apple. I hope they don't make it impossible for their cables to work on other devices.

I would agree that Apple contributed a lot to the usb-c project. All told there are 79 engineer names listed on the contributor's list from various companies of which 18 were Apple engineers or 23%.

        Not a surprise as USB-C port was designed by Apple. The size, color and fully reversibility are dead giveaway. Apple also released the first mass market USB-C device in the new MacBook.

          Weather you like it or not its going to happen. I've been saying this since they came out with their MacBook. It's also going to help with fast charging just like any other smart phone has now a days. People saying they wont do it because they wont make as much money with accessories, well frankly you're not looking at the big picture. Everyone that has 5s-7plus and are thinking of upgrading they will need to replace all the accessories they already had.

            the iphone is a big waste of money.
            this year they removed the 3.5mm and called it a move on toward the future just to make their i-sheeps spend more!

They rewarded Apple by making them the biggest smartphone vendor in the world last quarter. The amazing thing is they did so with an ASP of $692 whereas Samsung have an ASP of around $280, meaning Samsung is moving a lot of cheap devices whereas Apple is moving a lot of high price devices.

              The 80% have spoken, and the sooner folks get with the program the better off they will be. Just like in the past those folks will get dragged into the future whether they like it or not. I hear the same arguments everytime. The same was said about flash, glass keyboard etc... this is no different.

                Won't happen. Apple love money too much. they will stick to their lightning connector so that they break every 3 weeks and you have to get another one from apple. if they did move to USC type C they will make sure that they wont work on any other phone other than iphones and that all the other type C cables don't charge iphones like they do with some third party lightning connectors

And yet, 80/20 don't even care what strangers'have as phones. It is usually covered by some hideous case or the random strangers are too busy looking at their own phone.

                  Hard to believe a $50 Nokia 3310 reboot has a removable battery, microSD slot, FM radio, and 3.5mm headphone jack while the new $700+ iPhone 7/7 Plus lacks all those. The industry needs to return to the basics. Not all about style with no substance but it seems ti fall under this 80/20 rule that shallow, insecure kiddies prefer.

Th... moreBecause the 3.5 audio jack is already gone on the iPhone and it's not coming back at this point so move on. You may not like it but Apple is following their 80/20 rule, meaning the 80% do not care about the 3.5 jack removal. That's all the confirmation Apple needed. If you fall in the 20% then you either move on to a manufacture that caters to your need or deal, it's as simple as that.

                                This is such nonsense. What the journal meant is the USB-C to Lightning. Apple is not going to ditch the lightning part. There are no reasons to do so, not at this point. USB-C just got audio in Sept. 2016 whereas lightning had it since 2012. No chance of them getting rid of lightning right now, in 5 years, yes, but not right now.

                                        I am reluctant at getting the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge because it is stuck on the USB-A standard while the Note7 had it. I think this is actually a good move for Apple but makes people who bought the new MacBook Pros look smart and made the ones who bought the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus look like fools. I can finally charge an iPhone, Android, and Nintendo Switch using the same cord.
