Tann Hauser, 05 Mar 2017First you need to look into definition of "managment".... ... moreThere is plenty of management on OnePlus phones for example (the one in the video).

At first they used to not allow as many background apps for the reasons you quoted, in later firmware they fixed most of the battery issues by dropping apps with ram or battery leaks.

They basically use the advance battery stats of Nougat for just that, so yes some apps are dropped from the background no matter what , but the vast majority of them are still on.

This is a bug that is easily solvable even on mobiles with good enough documentation of an app lifecycle (as newer android seem focused on).

So yes, OnePlus 3 running Nougat has both a great amount of allowed background batteries and excellent battery life. The two are not mutually exclusive, it's merely harder to do.

Sony's way (actually putting less ram) is the worse way IMO. Because it stifles innovation on the software front (no creative ways to penalize bad apps, as they'd constantly be dropped always being the slowest to load), accustoming users to a second rate experience (iphones had instant recall of background apps for years; yes they do that mostly by killing most of backgrounding but the experience is ultra fast, mostly for that reason alone, isn't it time to get it on android too?).

BTW you get reloads on Sony after the 5th or 6th app. On Oneplus you have to go as far as number 15 (at least that's how far I got it). And yes the number of apps I use are over 10 (as many people's are), that comes with the territory (for example my favorite news sources have individual apps that I much prefer over their web version).

BTW OnePlus 3 cannot use replaceable batteries, it still makes the day more often than not.

Replaceable batteries are for a different purpose, it allows screen on time to last more than 6-7 hours (which is basically the max with most current phones). This is huge if you need to move a lot during your workday. It also means that I had to drop gaming from my every day uses, as gaming kills the battery fast enough to a point that does not let the phone make the day.

So yes, I can cope without removable batteries, but it was a big downgrade. IMO Big ram amount + good memory management + replaceable battery is mostly what I need from my portable computer that my phone has become. Sadly I cannot get one, at least I want to have the second. With Sony I can have none, so it's obviously not the phone for me (low battery by comparison, slow by comparison), and I would certainly not pay top dollar for it.

I can imagine someone who uses his phone less and/or matters less to him to like this phone based on looks or camera, but I cannot imagine any power user even looking twice at it.

Anonymous, 05 Mar 2017As expected, this test does not test ram retention. No wond... moreFirst you need to look into definition of "managment"....
Managment is dedicated resource appliance for best performance.
Therefore RAM appliance is actually ram managment, not RAM availability per se.
in your 6 gb phone that you say should keep everything in ram cache....there is obviously absolutely no ram managment.
Android, unfortunatelly for you, has inbuilt ram managment limits, exactly to prevent resource waisting of SoC and battery by keeping RAM always active, and which will never allow all 6 gb to be ever used, unless rooted....(as I said, check it out yourself). After its limit, apps will reload in multitask even with your 6 gb ram.
Its a mobile OS, which must take care of passive tech resources, like battery.
No wonder you need extra batteries over 24 hr time, if you indeed need 50+ active apps in RAM cache ( which cant be true, and you most certainly get app reloads even with 6 gb ram).
      ?!?
4 gb (even3gb) is over the top on Android OS for all needs, to make it work flawlessly and resourcefully, up ro 30+ cache active apps.
If you are one of rarest mobile users that need more nonmanaged 30+ cache active apps (dependant on more ram) you should remain using desktop computers with active energy resource, where it actually makes sense, as you dont depend on batteries.

I don't get this point. Bezels are basically useless parts of the phone's front, why not turn it into a bezel that actually show information?

AnonD-521587, 05 Mar 2017everyone is having all these idiotic arguments not realizin... moreThat is hardly any variance in software optimization on androids. Most comes from Google so it's common among all phones, the rest is simply too many background processes (say the myriad Samsung services), but again it's not software optimization. More Ram almost always means more performance, just check speed tests that take in account ram retention.

The practical purpose of the bezeless design is having pocketable phones with large screens ... simple as that. You can't go both ways with it, I.E. you have to choose in most cases (do you want a small phone, or a large screen), shaving bezels off takes a lot of that choice away, which is nice for many people. The problems that arise from high body to screen ratio seem easily solvable too (a bit thicker for the extra battery, phone case for protection, palm rejection software for accidental touches).

Anonymous, 04 Mar 2017So funny how so many Android users call themselves "power u... moreWhile talking of mobile OS, yes Android users are only true power users, due to androids root capabilities. IOS and now redundant WindowsMobile OS do not have that luxury.
If you mean Windows desktop performance and power usage, youre thinking wrong, mobile SoCs will never reach desktop CPU and GPU percormance due to simple fact....they must be designed for mobile compact and energy savy appliance....

Anonymous, 05 Mar 2017Most people (and all gamers) hold their phones on the frame... moreNonsense, frame or bezel dont matter in that regard, what matters is with what you hold your frame.
In bezeless design you cant hold with other than your fingers as there is a screen to operate with your thumbs, which is too close to frame. Holding frame with fingers, for your thumbs to be able to reach all screen areas, is clumsy and more prone to accidental drops. Its just factually unpractical.
In bezel design you are able to hold with both fingers and palms, enhancing your grip on the device, which is quite more practical.
Im not willing to sacrifice practicallity and usage experience for the sake of some bezel less trend going on.
People buying Galaxy edges started to notice that in quite large numbers. Samsung trying to remedy that with unsuccessful software solutions to make those screen edges less touch sensitive is proof of bad concept.
And now they give them even less....
                Nonsense design trend.

everyone is having all these idiotic arguments not realizing pure specs don't matter with ram, but rather software optimization.

bezels actually make the phone look better, and also more practical to hold. Lots of people in the XDA forusm are complaining of accidental screen touch and difficult of use with hand.

bezels also do make the phone look nice.

Sony has reached such perfection the only thing people can pick on is the bezels nvm the fact that its screen to body ratio is still higher than iphones and pixels.

Tann Hauser, 04 Mar 2017https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1AsMDrXQh_c Thats Sony ram... moreAs expected, this test does not test ram retention. No wonder, that's where Sony loses and pretty much why oneplus is unbelievably faster in practice.

All the while this 3GB phone is reloading an app for the nth time OnePlus 3 would be recalling it from memory instantly. That's the point of extra ram, that reviewer checked none of it despite being 90% of every day experience (unless you are one of those that keeps closing the background apps which is definitely not recommended).

In fact the fact that you have that much free memory is further proof that your phone actually has bad memory management. Free ram is useless ram. Ideally most of ram would be used at all times, either as asset caching , or for apps running in the backgorund...

Seeing 2GB of free ram and you *know* that your phone's ram management is pretty aggressive, therefore you own a slow phone (too much reloading of assets)

About the removable battery. What part of instant 100% don't you understand? Carrying a mobile charger not only is it a hassle (much bigger than a spare battery) it's not very practical either as it leads to some very slow *tethered* charging. It's exactly the kind of thing that a power user would not use.

Like I said those Sony phones are for laymen and those who don't mind having mid range performance in every day tasks and battery. And I would be OK with those if it was reflected in the price. Most people don't buy Sony anymore for a reason. Too expensive for how little they give you.
