Apple developing in-house GPU for next year’s iPhone

03 April 2017
Apple informed the GPU provider Imagination that it is working separately on an independent chip to lower partner’s reliance.

Sony The Innovator, 04 Apr 2017Androids got nothing to worry about. Qualcomm's Adreno GPUs... moreApples emphasis is focussed on speed, how much faster this chip performs better than the previous, and how much faster than the original device

I am concerned that Apples announcement of a new GPU has had such a detrimental effect on the share price making it a potential take over target by Apple itself

Apple has such huge cash reserves there are few companies that Apple could not purchase, The target in order to survive has to literally beg fir help from its wounder.

There are white knights out there that could purchase Imagination, do keep it viable as Apple are unlikely to develop a GPU, and Apple has previously just waited to be sued, after Apple produces its own plagiarised product

Don't you get it? That is all fine for low power. Everyone and their mothers are optimizing everything for multicore, and that is where stuff counts. Apple is very happy making due for power efficiency at single core to use the smallest possible battery, luckily not every manufacturer is trying to squeeze their customers out of power.

Optimised CPU AND GPU will just be an insane combination. The next iPhones will require seatbelts so that you can hang on to it.

[deleted post]This isn't even a debate. Even GSMArena acknowledges the insane speeds of the iPhone with their optimised chips. iPhone 7 may in fact still be faster than the S8.

Anonymous, 03 Apr 2017The apple is finally going to get buriedNope. Its the android competition that's gonna geg buried in terms of performance. Just look at the single-core performance between the A10 chip and the SD835. That's what the GPU comparison is going to look like after Apple ditches PowerVR and start making their own.

Why do I have a feeling that this is going to end with Apple buying Imagination and thus getting the best of both worlds?

Sony The Innovator, 04 Apr 2017Androids got nothing to worry about. Qualcomm's Adreno GPUs... moreAndroids have everything tI worry about, once Apple switched from generic arm to in house cpus, they *crashed* the competition (and continue doing so). When the same happens with gpus, say by bye to androids. Lel

Androids got nothing to worry about. Qualcomm's Adreno GPUs are still better than Apple's PowerVR GPUs. SD820 beats the A10 Fusion in graphics benchmarks. What Androids need to do is to incorporate faster memory chips to match the iPhone's level of performance, because that's what's keeping them behind. I heard that Samsung's newest UFS 2.1 storage (found on the S8 series and XZ Premium) can offer similar speeds as the NVMe storage of the iPhones, but I seriously doubt Androids can truly blow iPhones away easily. The mere fact that the 3T with UFS 2.0 barely comes close to the iPhone 7 Plus in speed tells us that UFS 2.1 might be able to close that gap a little further. If only Samsung was good at software optimization like OnePlus, Sony, HTC, Google, etc.

Now they are going to do the same with the GPU? The gap between androids and iphones would widen. Simple as that.
