Apple developing in-house GPU for next year’s iPhone

03 April 2017
Apple informed the GPU provider Imagination that it is working separately on an independent chip to lower partner’s reliance.

Cool, iPhones will be a lot faster and a whole lot more efficient. Looking forward to it.

Yann, 03 Apr 2017In my opinion, after breaking the deal with Apple, PowerVR ... moreI've seen PowerVR GPU's in MediaTek SoC's, but that was a long while ago. Did they stop licensing out to non-Apple OEM's when they got the contract for the iPhone?

I am genuinely asking btw. I clearly remember having a Blu Dash (something or other) with a PowerVR GPU, but that was WAY back in 2009-2010.

They are probably just getting a new license from Imagination which lets them alter the design and re brand it. Kinda of like what Qualcomm is doing with the 835, they use A73 cores but Qualcomm has a new license which allows them to rebrand the core(Kyro 280)

Anonymous, 03 Apr 2017In the end, Apple will just buy ImaginationApple already considered buying Imagination last year, but ultimately decided against it. It would be seen as a dirty move by Apple if they decided to buy Imagination now right after their stock falls by 70%

Shares went down 60%, it is massive blow for Imagination. But, for my opinion, it is probably the best mobile GPU creator, so i have a feeling they not going to suffer for too long.

Apple is getting billions every q without doing anything, thanks to their huge working ecosystem.

Just pay up for IP, expertise and done. ImgTec doesn't even have a Plan B. They're closed source all this time and almost never license their IP to other OEMs save for Intel (this was back when Intel was still in mobile play) and Apple.

They won't ever license nor sell it outside their own hardware ecosystem so no issue of money making separately on mobile GPU.

Apple realize that iPhone golden era is somehow fading out, and they prepare them self to get money from other sources, they started with minijack, where now other need to pay them to use their lighting connector, and now they want to make money on GPU, so they will keep money in their pocket.
