Samsung announces Galaxy Tab 8.9, thinner Galaxy Tab 10.1

22 March, 2011
Surprise, surprise! Samsung announced not one, but two tablets during their CTIA event. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 was joined by a reworked version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Both tablets run Android 3.0 Honeycomb...

AnonD-1544, 22 Mar 2011 Yawn! Samsung flooding the market with their copy cat ... moreI guess you're with the "One size fits all" group then. Personally I think the 10 ich tablet might feel a bit too big to carry around, while 7 inch tablet is too small to make it worth having beside my phone. 8.9 inch is so far the best compromize I've seen.

And you people saying Samsung is "copying" Apple by making it thinner.. Hahaha, really? So I guess Apple copyied whichever cell phone manufacturer had the thinnest phone before iPhone 4 too then? Are Apple also copying Motorola by having a dual Core tablet? If iPhone 5 has a bigger display, are they then copying Samsung Galaxy S and the other 4 inch phones? If a company lowers the price to meet a competitor, is it then a copy cat? Haha, of course not!

Samsung making their tablet thinner isn't copy-catting, it's merely a case of meeting the competition.

Jteve Sobs, 23 Mar 2011That's only true if you add up all the Android tablet maker... moreYou could turn that around as well. There's only one company in the world with iOS, but several for Android. That means that everyone who wants iOS HAS to go to Apple, while Android users have a lot more choise in terms of design and taste.

    To make a silly comparison:
Let's say there was only one company in the world who made vanilla ice cream, but several who made chocolate ice cream. The company which made vanilla would probably sell better than any single chocolate ice cream company, even if more people liked chocolate than vanilla in the world.

So in other words, it's also unfair to compare a single company iOS to multiple companies with Android competing over the Android users.

      WOW..is soo..good.
      Samsung u rock.
Don't listen to those haters who think the IPAD 2 is all that.

Btw.. Samsung produces like 20% of the components that go into IPAD 2 and they also help apple design for their products.

Samsung needs to stop having multiple SKU as it will lead to confusion - mistrust - lower sales

A thinner 10.1 , Galaxy SII with Targa Chip , Galaxy SII without SMOLED - What is wrong with you Samsung????

Change - Have only one product and people will trust you with this strategy you will be viewed like the korean brands were first viewed when they came out - with a lot of mistrust

Fikril, 23 Mar 2011Ummm you've forgotten that Apple does not manufacture hardw... moreI said produced and not manufacture. Sure some of the iPad's insides are manufactured by different manufacturers but ultimately, it's all designed and instructed by Apple.

There's no such thing as "giving leeway" to competitors just because you're a manufacturer, this is business. So far, Samsung has been clever enough to not bite the hand that feeds it.

Jteve Sobs, 23 Mar 2011That's only true if you add up all the Android tablet maker... moreI totally agree with your sentiment re: the unfairness of comparing one manufacturer to a whole group of others, competitively. Funny how that point never gets raised in the endless "Nokia vs. The Rest" threads around here ....

aaanwyay, back on topic just thought it might interest people that Vodafone Australia has just posted a "preorder expression of interest" notification on their website for the original (8MP) Galaxy Tab 10.1.

I'd rather a thinnner, lighter device than the 8MP camera (3MP is enough for my personal needs on such a device), so I reckon I'll wait on this one. The prices and plans are looking pretty good, and AFAIK none of that micro-SIM business.

Jteve Sobs, 23 Mar 2011That's only true if you add up all the Android tablet maker... moreUmmm you've forgotten that Apple does not manufacture hardware at all so your statement is obviously a fail. Moreover, ever wondered why Samsung, till now, was never sued by Apple? Samsung themselves manufactures parts (audio chips, screens, etc.) for Apple, hence in return, Apple gave Samsung leeway to copy their products. So technically whatever Apple product you own has bits of Samsung inside muahahahahaha!

That's only true if you add up all the Android tablet makers and pit them against just the iPad. Multiple devices and manufacturers to overthrow just one manufacturer's device? Clearly an unfair comparison. Individually, no tablet can even come close to outselling the iPad now or anytime soon.

Android is just an operating system thrown to manufacturers, the iPad is both hardware and software thrown into one! Until the day a single manufacturer can achieve this (producing both hardware and software), only then will the playing field be leveled.

Samsung should really step up their game and stop copying what Apple did or is gonna do. Everything from their Galaxy S to the Galaxy Tabs to even the Galaxy Player is all based on what Apple did. Uninnovative, uninspiring and uncreative.

Apple made SAMSUNG to change all of it's physical appearance of it's tablet!
iPad 2 will outsell all of the tablets of SAMSUNG by huge numbers! We will see this and we don't need to talk any More!!!

AMK, 22 Mar 2011In case u didnt notice, android has the highest market shar... moreWhilst you are correct in that android has a greater market share. This is spread across several companies and devices. If you compare samsung alone in the tablet market, their share is tiny.

That said I'm glad to see this tablet. More choice can only be better for us, the consumers.

This is really great! they could do the redesigning thing in no time. the only thing that is not necessary is the presence of two tablets which makes non sence. the 2.1 bluetooth version in the 10.1 version is a disapointment
