HTC might have a 16 megapixel WP7 phone in the works

17 April, 2011
HTC has never been a competitor into the megapixel race, but this might as well change soon. According to a leaked short video ad, HTC is preparing a 16 megapixel cameraphone running Windows Phone...

Davide, 17 Apr 2011I see that irony and sarcasm is lost on you... Let me ex... moreSamsung and SE had 12's back in the middle of 2009 and I think the Samsung i810 Innov8 was like in 2008, that thing was rocking an 8mp sensor (A good one at that). To think that back in 2008 the iPhone couldn't even send a picture message at that time. I'm no fan boy of any brand I've had them all, but from a tech stand point, I've always felt Apple was overrated and over priced, and the iPhone follows that suite perfectly. None the less looking at the devices from a few years ago, camera wise, we've almost gone backwards it seems, except for HD Video, but that's just because the processors weren't around back then.

I think they need to work on their 5 and 8mp cameras first. I'm sorry I've got my Desire-Z and my old D900 took better pictures. That thing is 4 years old with a little 3mp sensor on it. And why is everyone going with LEDs! Those things are useless outside of being a flash light. No one needs a 16mp camera phone, Samsung did it first with that Pixon12 thing (which was amazing til I got my hands on a Satio) and then Nokia killed everyone with the N8. Maybe I'm a bit old fashioned but I just don't see the need for 16mp especially from a company who can't even make a decent 5mp or 8mp look good.

If the quality is similar to other HTC phones then this will be no revolution in the camerpahones.

Well, if this is true, it would definitely be a bad -- or at least alarming -- piece of news for Nokia which is making the switch to Windows Phone 7. Nokia would have to compete with HTC and such a great would-be camera phone, and it would also be wrong to assume that, HTC aside, other companies would allow Nokia to have a large slice of the Microsoft cake easily... Nokia, hope you can get the ball rolling.

              Megapixels are not everything...

The photo quality depends mostly on the lens-software optimization rather than MPs. I would take a 6 year-old 5MP camera than any mobile phone's camera, anytime..!

It is good to have the ability to choose, if you do not need 16 mp then just set the camera to take smaller pictures. Many pixels are good if you want to edit the image, cut or copy parts of the image...

Laurynas, 17 Apr 2011Then you have a wrong feeling, because I know what does the... moreI read your previous comment and I understood what you meant, in fact I've added the personal preferences example as a compliment to your idea, however in the end I mentioned that whatever you're doing you actually doing cannot possibily NEED 16MP shots! lots of professional cameramen with Dedicated Camera and not some Cameraphone are working just fine with 12 MP and below..
about downsising you're right but really if you are going to downsize anyway what is the point? and I know not all will print their image but I've used that approached to explain the size...it's the same if you open a 5MP and a 16MP picture on your computer you'll have different experiences: 5 MP will be a big picture that you can zoom into it and scroll up and down and left and right a little...16MP just too much scrolling:s
in few words, ofcorse it's a personal preference I mean everything goes down to the costumours personal preferences but that does make some preferences a little stupid or at least going too much.
And I'm sorry if you thought that I desrespected you in any ways when I told you that it looks like you don't understand the MP concept, I mean no disrespect:) cheers

                      Cod3rror, 17 Apr 20115MP, IS enough, Sigma DP1, 4.7MP http://www.sigma-dp1.c... moreJeez, what a blurry pic... Excuse Me :)

I like to watch deep in the scenes / landscapes, not just
at a picture unzoomed and its foreground, and to not talk
too much about it, your snow is already pretty blurry on the
front and you could at least correct your balance, or choose
another mode it's too much red tinted. I'm no expert, just saying.

PS: We can show you fine 2MP shoots also with your way of thinking..

AnonD-5738, 17 Apr 2011I feel that you dont actually know what does the number of ... moreThen you have a wrong feeling, because I know what does the number of Megapixels actually means! Just read my previous comment one more time and you will see that your reply about various needs just proves what i already have said. And that's mean number of Megapixels is preatty personal thing, maybe for someone 5MP is enough and maybe for someone 16MP or even 18MP isn't enough.

Also remember that there is two more things:

                        1) In digital photography it is always easy to down size.
                        2) People use images not only for printing them on the paper.

So, proposition that 5MP is enough may be right, but also it may be wrong, because it depends on personal needs, it is individual thing.

Look bach for HTC camera phones ranges until now, they all got crappy camera lens and it compare with Nokia N8.
So, you see clearly difference between night and day?

Stretching a small image sensor to produce 16mp photo? The photo wont looks natural. Nokia Windows phone with N8 image sensor is a better buy since Nokia Windows phone also come with high spec, in fact there is better quality built and better audio quality.
