Apple answers location recording fears, promises a software fix

27 April, 2011
In the last few days Apple took lots of negative feedback concerning the location tracking affair. Today Apple released a Q&A statement, which admits to the tracking and calls it a 'bug'. An update to fix it...

Anonymous, 28 Apr 2011You are comparing a phone provider to Apple, who only provi... moreNo. If you read my comment properly and the comment I was replying to. You'll see that I was responding to a statement from a guy who claimed that carriers don't track and store data when clearly they do. I never mentioned it in relation to what apple has done. I happen to agree that it is wrong of apple.

The fact is. We are tracked every day on our phones. I'm glad to see apple is backtracking but as an iPhone owner I'm angry that without the vigilance of these two guys, apple would still be doing this and have only backtracked because they got found out. If I was another device user I'd be worried about what everyone else is doing that hasn't been discovered yet because I don't believe for a second that the likes of google, samsung et al are morally innocent companies. They're all big, arrogant corporations.

I really dont care. Any modern mobile can track you. Any modern mobile can be installed with software that will log your sms's and phone calls and even place them on the webpage for you. I have seen this operating on a Nokia. I works dam well. Do you really know what software is on the mobile from your employer private or Government.

Bug, what a joke. A bug would include a little more or less in the file, not create and populate a file. The only "bug" or "feature" is the lack of encryption on the file itself. What fool of a developer didn't realize this file would be discovered and induce additional costs for Apple? What really bothers me about Apple, is how dishonest they are. xman

                oh dear a "BUG"
the term bug implicates a piece of software malfunctioning it must be a rather intelligent bug to track, collect and store all user location data in the apple AKA SKYNET/CYBERDYNE servers im quite worried my iPhone is now going to become self aware and prceed to kill me and my family this is not a bug apple its software that does what you designed it to!!!!!!!!

Apple are being very black and white about this whole thing, whilst other phone manufacturers like Samsung and Nokia are being VERY VERY quiet. Collecting information on wifi hotspots is perfectly normal, it's just the fact that it is saved for too long is what the critics are latching on to. It doesn't matter about the means, ALL phones collect data about yourself. And its YOU who agree to it in the terms and conditions.

This is just another example of Apple's critics taking a story and blowing it out of all proportion.

"BUG"? Oh yeah. Just like antenna gate problem, Apple just can't admit their fault! That's just another reaseon why I stay away from Apple products.

Apple also collects anonymous traffic data to provide “iPhone users an improved traffic service in the next couple of years”.

What happens after a couple of years??

Apple is so clever, first they would do a mistake and then they would try and cover it up by giving some awful statements and if that does not work, they would go ahead and state/ admit 'Oh yeah, itz just a bug & would b fixed by an update.'

Apple you know what, just damn you and your updates.

Apple is nothing but just a co- operate Spy.

                              Cheers!!

I used to have ipod touch gen 4 as well, but in the end i sold it and got iphone 4. The reason? Iphone has double the memory, GPS, much better camera and it is a phone. With that, I don't need carry 2 devices.

So if you think that you can take the remaining S$300 to get a good phone and don't mind that, that's good. For me i prefer the other option.

anonymouse, 28 Apr 2011this is the very reason iOS and Android sucks!!! they commi... moreyup that's right. it's really frustrating that they go on reasoning with people for whatever mistake they have.
But one thing i learned from business school is that, even if you, yourself have your own business, you cannot just admit a mistake. you have to protect your business and come up with an explanation of the issue and just provide a solution for that. its better than not fixing it at all.
Android and Apple doesnt want to commit mistakes. who does. but if they go on everyday like "oh im sorry its our fault we'll fix it", "oh im sorry again, that's another fault, we'll work on it" etc..., it will be worse for their business.

impt thing is, they are giving us solutions. nothing is perfect.
