OnePlus 5 caught cheating on multi-core benchmarks

21 June 2017
The way it cheats is similar but not quite the same as the OnePlus 3 before it.

Zenodroid, 21 Jun 2017Look at the specs on any phone. Go down to the battery and ... moreThey all say "up to" and some legal variation of "your mileage may vary".
If you are not versed in English, that means the best you'll ever get is what is stated there, the only promise the manufacturers make is it will last less than that.

On the other hand I don't recall reading the disclaimer of "our device may perform dangerous tricks to inflate some benchmark scores".

I've been using phones since 10 years maybe. Never have i ever even a single time have I run any benchmark on any phn and i have used quite a lot of them. all platforms. So as long as the phn is fast, smooth, lag free and running cool its a great phone.Rest all is BS and propoganda. These all stuff r done to defame each others.

Boebus666, 21 Jun 2017Hold out for the LG G6, its a truly special device and it r... moreThat's true. Though I am an Xperia fan but Sony has disappointed me a bit with their pricing of late. The Z5 is retailing at the same price as the V20 and G5 here in India and the former are one generation newer. Moreover, LG has been doing everything right off late and I appreciate that. Going to wait a bit more for g6 to fall in my budget bracket else the v20 is a very capable device too. The OP3T, OP5 and such other substandard products are an absolute no go for me.

Look at the specs on any phone. Go down to the battery and read the time they say it will last. Then you can see that every one cheat on benchmark/tests.

05PR3Y, 21 Jun 2017I honestly don't know why this is even considered cheating.... moreWhat you're saying isn't the case here. It is not under normal conditions as there is no basic consumer way to turn off the thermal regulation in order to hold max clock speeds on the small cluster, it would be too dangerous, as the phone would get too hot under that constant duress, and fry itself...

The product testing is not representative of the product when used by the consumer, it is altered during testing, therefore can be considered cheating...

One could bare to question if a benchmark is actually indicative of something, but it is unquestionable when someone tries to tamper with the results (regardless of how meaningless said results may be).

            Nice try, but no dice.

I honestly don't know why this is even considered cheating...If the phone is capable of it in standard processes (which it is), then it should be the norm, and everyone should do it. They are showing off the potential of the phone at stock limitations, meaning that anyone can reach this if they need to perform so high. I run my devices locked at the top speed. It boosts performance, and runs a benchmark like a standard PC. If it's not throttling, it's perfectly normal.

If the answer is yes, then oneplus cheated and you suck.

You know why processors don't always run at the highest frequency and why they recommend not overclocking a cpu that doesn't having hefty cooling solution? That is the reason they introduced thermal throttling even on desktop cpus. Excessive heat lowers the longevity pf a device and can burnout a cpu. That is why they don't let the cpu run at max frequency all the time as OP5 has. They are cheater and making the phone less lasting. You should feel bad for your ignorance.

Showing the potential of the OP5 means tou show what the customer will experience in a normal situation. That mechanism is not a normal situation.

""The official statement from OnePlus claims that this way it shows the performance potential of the 5""

Potentially If you remove phone case, put proper cooling on it, SD835 will have raw power similar to some Laptop CPU.

Potentially, if you remove Android that today is main reason why we cant use all that power properly, you will get super fast device without even cheating...

Potentially, if you we all jump at the same time, we could create black hole inside earth that would suck every ldiot that still look at benchmarks when buying a phone.

This is extremely bad press for OnePlus
I'm not entirely convinced by their alleged mantra about 'Never Settle' & marketing jargon about being different from other OEMs. It's just a cheap marketing ploy by another Chinese manufacturer. I find the whole thing dubious.
This kind of headline really puts me off trusting them with my money. Not impressed with cheating in life generally and makes me wonder what else they're lying about.
