Humans don't see in terms of pixels or squares. Our eyes are orbs and they capture light in a circular sense. However, since our eyes are half-recessed they don't capture a complete 360', in fact, they're quite narrow sighted. What we see is actually what our brain processes. And since we have two (narrow) orbs, our actual vision is more oval. It's widest at the centre, which is roughly 210' vision. And its tallest again at the centre which is roughly 150'. So a quick arithmetic would yield 210/150 which is 1.4 or 7:5 or 12.6:9 aspect ratio. However the top-left, top-right, bottom-right, and bottom-left corners aren't observable. And it is the vertical matrices that suffer the most blindspotting, you can actually test this out yourself.
Our vision is actually less circle-shaped and shaped more like something in-between an Oval and the English Cross. Which is what you would get if you merged two ovals together.
So in that sense a 21:9 aspect ratio would actually be closer to our native vision. And 16:9 was chosen by Hollywood as a compromise between the expensive Wide-Screen aspect ratio and the mainstream 4:3 television aspect ratio.
Regardless, that's mostly American politics. The best aspect ratio would actually be √2 (root 2) or 1:1.414 or ~10:7. It scales up by doubling. It can hold two perfect rectangles side-by-side (think multiwindows). And its the dominant aspect ratio of the world as per the International Standards for A4-scaled paper. You can even scale it to powers of two, hence; binary. Thus screen resolution could in fact scale up along side transistor count or performance based on a computer metric... not like the guess-work method we adopt today.

As for curved LCD tv's and 3D tvs, they're a fad as well and as soon as the novelty fades, they will die (actually, they're practically dead). Curved screen edges in a phone? Yes, they too are a fad and they will die as soon as the novelty fades. I don't see curved screen edges in a phone and wider aspect ratios (18:9; 18.5:9) becoming mainstream. They just don't serve any meaningful purpose other than to 'look different' which can become outdated fast. They will soon be popular 'collector's items' due to their rarity years from now.

The actual reason why these phones sell less is because the market has become saturated, and smartphone sales are down as whole. Also, the S8 doesn't lack anything major the the S7 has. Anonymous, 21 Jul 2017Enough of curved screens, nobody wants that.I agree, curved screens look nice and futuristic but serve no meaningful purpose other than waste valuable screen space for traditional touch screen interactions. The curved edges are very weak spots where fracture can happen spontaneously through thermal stress or mechanical stress from dropping even with a protective case. This fad will fade soon.
