r33fd, 19 Nov 2017No, it's not quite . I did the math here http://screen-siz... moreWrong math. Older Note's screen is a tiny less than 5.7 inches, while Note 8's is a tiny more than 6.3 inches , making them having the exact same width.

Your nagging about the dual edged screen is a moot point. Samsung would had used it whether she were to have a 16:9 Note or a 18:9 Note (as evidenced by Note 7) ... point remains that you don't lose any width by the tall aspect ratio. I mean how would you, most manufacturers merely took their screen and made them taller, most use the same width... in fact some (Apple for example) actually made their phones wider...

The tall aspect ratios is about utilizing the top and bottom bezels, nothing more , nothing less. If you like them to remain dumb bezels be my guest, most people don't prefer that, hence the move to the new ratios...

Imperator Neubaticus, 19 Nov 2017Lol ir blaster makes it the best? You're delusional bro. I ... moreNaaah, I'm good, I like pro phones.

BTW how's that plug hugging treating you? I'm having 16 hours screen on-time over here, side effect of a removable batt, I'm sure waiting an hour for your phone to charge is great too (never charged my phone for the last 8 years or so).

Pen is very similar (have used both). I use my IR blaster all the time (presentations).

Go play with your toy now. It even has a tall screen for your tiny, sweet chatting. Isn't that great? I mean how would your friend know about your new outfit? Note 8 is *exatly* what my 9 year old would want ... then again I'm 30 years her senior and have actual needs which is why I would never had bought it for myself, nor would any pro user for that matter (there's a reason why Note 4 sold like twice of the projected sales of Note 8, one is a Note, the other is a toy).

16:9 is the perfect ratio to me. I can pull down the notification with thumb easily, watching YouTube video without black blocking or cut-off in landscape mode. Bezel is fine for me, slightly smaller bezel is okay but must use the best materials to protect the fragile parts, unless you are wealthy to spend money after a drop damaged for bezelless smartphone, not to mention that all nowadays flapships are very expensive and all of it with non-removable battery conditions.

AnonD-711468, 19 Nov 2017Again you don't seem to get it. The equivalent of your n... moreNo, it's not quite .
I did the math here http://screen-size.info/
        16/9 at 5.7 is 7.1 cm width
18.5/9 at 6.3 is 7.0 cm width but of that the display is curved at the edges taking away a few millimeters from the usable space on each side as well .
Trust me, I held a note 8 in hand next to my note 4 and it felt smaller in width (not by much, but it was).
Some people like really big phones and I don't know why other manufacturers who used to have phablets (like LG or HTC don't make big screens anymore) .

NOTE : I actually wouldn't mind the note 8 screen but it has other bad factors for me to upgrade to it:
glass is fragile and prone to scratches , the battery is not very good for that powerful components and it's not removable (meaning when it degrades you need a trip to a samsung service to deal with it) , the speaker is absolute trash ! (compared with how loud and clear note 4's speaker is) . and the price for all that is just ludicrous .

And now i have a note8. It's no contest. Even the spen on the note8 is lightyears better than the note4. I mean i loved my old note too. But i'm also grounded in reality. About time you should too.

Thin or no bezels are alright, though length of phone any bigger than 5.5' is painful at the end of day. Yes for 18:9, no or thin bezels, 5.5 is my idea of a good ergonomic design. Shall also result in less droppings from hand while in use.

To break from all these figures, I am curious to the pending super Nokia 9. Supposedly, a minimum 5 inch screen, low to no bezel and only 140mm high. Reachable, pocket friendly and max screen. If so, I think this discreet, smart unit could our business purchase.

The equivalent of your note is Note 8 at 6.3 inches.

Like I wrote in my previous post you lose none of the width, if you do, you do something wrong. You merely utilize the useless bezels on top and below the screen.

BTW how do you like your top and bottom bezels doing nothing?

I also own a Note (Note 4), but I'd love if I could utilize the top and bottom of my phone as well. I mean I'd still keep my Note because it's simply the best of all Notes (only one with IR and zero charge time whilst also running semi modern hardware).

I think at the end it is what you do more with your phone. I don't watch YouTube, prefer my pc for that. Reading news, social media and camera is what I do more (if I'm on a plane I watch movies that are wider than 16:9). I also prefer phones that are as thin (in width) as possible, so for more content I need longer phones. As that is my case the S8 was a perfect fit for me and that's why I ordered it. The important thing is maybe that 16:9 phones will continue be produced so that everyone has a choice passing their needs.

But I am using note (5.7 inch) for years and the new aspect means the actual useful size of the display in every new smartphone is smaller which I don't like .
Why not just give us some option with 5.7 inch 16.9 or equivalent ? I don't want my next phone to have smaller content when watching youtube/twitch in the future .
There are literally only 2 flagship phones with large display width this year : Mate 10 and Razer and they both have bad quality compared to amoled . While the Mate 10's screen is usable, the Razer's is absolute trash (horrific quality for a flagship and eats battery >2 times as fast as any other smartphone) .
Why can't we get any device with a good old 5.7 inch or bigger 16:9 amoled screen ?

Initially, I did not like the idea of the tall screen, i.e. 18:9 or taller. However, now I think there is merit to the tall screen. Besides the fact that it makes it slimmer and easier to handle with one hand, the extra resolution can go to the keyboard and virtual home and back buttons which typically takes up a fair bit of screen estate previously.

I like smaller bezel if doing right, 16:9 is perfect for everyone especially for people like me watching a lot of media and hate not using full screen or stupid cropping.
Thickness is the most useless thing, nnow it's all 7mm, even 10mm is good lol and put a bit battery with it stop with big phone with relatively small 3000mah battery.

The big PROBLEM with this poll is that the options "I only care about thin bezels" and "18:9 and wider is the future" divides voters between basically the same preference.

As said in the article, the two go hand in hand. When making polls, how to put the questions largely affects the results.

                                    I really don't care :)
                                    - It can have bezels if it has 3.5mm jack and waterproofing (bezels are perfect for holding the phone in landscape mode)
                                    - It can be 1.5cm thick if it has 4000+ battery
                                    - As for the aspect ratio, it's not that important, what really matters is that it doesn't brake into a million pieces if dropped on the floor.
By the way, how does the keyboard of a 18:9 display looks like in landscape mode? Is it easy to type?
Also, if they really want this format, why can't they just move the status bar down? I'm sure it can be done. I had that option on my old rooted phone.
It seems pretty convenient and solves a lot of issues for one handed use.
                                    Peace!

The only thing 18:9 is good at is split screen Youtube/Browsing. Everything else it's much worse at, especially for pdfs, comics, movies, etc.

Mate 10 did it right this year, by a mile. Don't think we'll see any more 16:9 flagships in 2018 though.
