Sony's cams suffers from two things:
1 optics - too wide angle and not that high quality with soft spots scattered all around the frame
2 - algorithmes. While all the other manufacturers provide so called HDR stacking algorithm, sony hasn't been doing anything in this direction. Even Motorola has done lolts of work on this field with z Force being the greatest example of it.
So yeah, Sony has to do something with those two things to not sinking

Sony's filed a patent for a "dynamic vibration system" for smartphones and tablets. Sounds a lot like an OIS system or an alternative to it.

Imperator Neubaticus, 30 Nov 2017Yet sony isn't anywhere near the top phone sellers the past... moreThink there are few things that might contribute to poor market share: not enough push on advertising, a lot of their phones look pretty much identical, a quite confusing naming system which make you think the different generations are only minor increments, group psychology where the big mass of customers, who dont have much knowledge on phones will see samsung and apple everywhere so will be thinking: well... if people are buying those, they must be the best ones out there, and the fast price decay/ it would feel stores just want to get rid of them.
hopefully, a new design language might help to change that.

It really depends on how you handle your phone.
From my understanding, all brands make different versions of their products depending on the market. I've heard that products for Asia (Japan excluded) or South America are inferior in quality than those made for Europe or USA.

The only thing that is bad about their phones are batteries and motherboards that die often (i wanted to buy some Xperias so many times, but everytime i searched for them, like 50% of them had motherboard problems). Though those problems appeared on Z series, not sure that it occurs now. I have repaired so many Xperias from Z series and 80% of them needed battery replacement. Oh and yeah, they crack easily, i remember them being advertised as strong phones.

As long as there's a 130mm high-end phone in their portfolio, I'm content. With small bezels You can easily put 5" screen in that size.

Xzp have display 120 hz Sony has blocked it to 60 hz, soon it will take an option to 120 hz
