Nokia 8 gets a poor DxOMark score

11 January 2018
The company's current flagship smartphone can't hold a candle to top scorers such as the Google Pixel 2, Apple iPhone X, and Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

      This is not representing the Nokia 8 Unit i own. though the camera has issues with X2 digital zoom image quality. Dynamic range is excellent. allows very big room for Shadow Highlight post processing. it's actually the HDR mode which flattens skin tonality. and the Camera (Google) limited interface. Exposure correction in stept of full 1.0 EV steps. i would not trust DXO on this as it can't be Trusted with Canon DSLR sensors, it seems that DxOMark is heavily biased towards specific color science. and systematically awards sensors of specific kind and maker. not that it's done intentionally, but rather the initial calibration might have been based on parameters that favor specific sensor behavior. there is no way that HTC U11 main camera outperforms that of Nokia 8. and surely not in such scale. as for Selfie Camera/Front Camera. this is exactly same Sensor and Lens without OIS. my Nokia 8 front camera takes at least as sharp if not sharper and more detailed images than HTC U11 or Samsung S8 main cameras in day light. Nokia 8 might not have the ideal and best Camera set up, and surely the Camera App and probably Drivers require urgent update from HMD and Zeiss. to bring the camera to it's full potential. but the systematic negative reviews on NOKIA 8 cameras on GSMARENA seem to be systematic in one direction.

                Seems like Nokia rejected to pay to DxOMark. No money means bad DxOMark. For example iPhone x has worse camera than S8, Note8, Pixel 2, V30, mate 10 and etc. But anyway has best DxOMark
                DxOMark = pay to win

                  Dxomark is nonsense. They rated Xperia Z5, and HTC 10 as the best smartphone cameras when they were released. Currently they also rate the Mate 10 camera better for photos than the Pixel 2. From what I have seen this is nonsense. And when it comes to HDR Auto the iPhone 8/X is extremely bad. Apple's HDR Auto nearly always chooses HDR off. I get much better results with HDR than with HDR Auto/off.

                    Nokia 8 has actually a pretty solid camera. I cannot believe how the put it's camera behind some unknown Chinese phones. Although, I don't believe that DxOMark's ratings are actually realistic.

                      AnonD-34062, 11 Jan 2018I've noticed that alot of the derisive comments on here are... moreAnonymous name is same like your name with your log in name. It's not like you have ID card or E-residency for loging in. This site dont even support these systems.

                      And well if HMD would of used some other name then Nokia as a new company who makes phones and wants to make market first in India and China and then go global i see then use old good brand name to just milk money out of people without giving anything good for return.

                      They would not have it so good with there phone if they would of just made new brand for it. Look how hard is to start up from zero with not known brand names. Look all the comments here who bash Chinese unknown brand names just cause they are made in China and have low price tag.

                      I was a fan of Nokia before they sold them selves to MS. I even like the windows phone and the promise of be different. Now that they look like any other Android phone they are like any other android phone.

                      Quality wise talk we can have when they have been in the market for some time. We cant look it and say it's the same quality like they were before. Before they had plastic phones with good quality and now if people see plastic they cry out like babies that uhh a plastic phone thats no quality.

                      I have had something like 20 phones in my life and only 2-3 of them have not been Nokia.
                      With these unknown brands from China i at least get screen protection film with them and cover case with it in the box. Not like Nokia new phones that are low end hardware that is old and asking for high price.

                      If Nokia would have it's own thing for the OS system then stock android i would still be interested in them. But now as they are on Android i can choose out of 20 different names what hardware i want and what the phone looks like. If i buy low budget phones i dont expect to have great quality camera on it and i dont expect it to last me long. For a 100 euro phone i can change them in every year and have the newest droid on it. I dont need 100 euro phone that have a old good brand name but hardware wise is 1GB ram and 8GB rom while i get 3GB ram and 32GB rom for that money.

                      Du you have trust in Essential phone ? It's a new brand and a new start up company. Trust comes in time. But HMD use old good name that everyone already know so it's easy for them to start up. Everyone know that Nokia is quality. IF HMD would of release there phone with the name of HMD then it would be like any other start up DOCOOL DOOPRO and so on name that nobody knows and have no trust on them. Name of the brand matters a lot and if people know them then they already have trust on them and that does not matter that there devices are new and are like any other company that have started up last few years.

                          DxO again seriously? LOL.. While I admit Nokia 8 is not as good as the pixel or HtC 11.. They are better than most other 12mp shooter.. Only the detail level is lower than that of Nokia 6's 16mp cam which beats oneplus5's cam.. But that Nokia 6 suffers corner softness due to the cheap lens used.. Nokia 7 fixed it by pairing the 16mp with zeiss.. So Nokia 7 has the best camera by HMD right now.. If only they would release it worldwide

                                    The fact that the 8 scored higher than the 808 tells me that the testers are using some other criteria for image "quality" than visual accuracy. Quite alot of modern phones take amazing pictures. The Nokia 8 is easily among them. No excuses needed.
