Some people are here commenting that they have run the test themselves after the patch and the performance didn't take a hit and at the same time, blaming it on the new 'iSLOW' (battery) *FEATURE*. That's even more pathetic, ain't it? 40% reduction over the 28% original reduction to force it's users to upgrade. Revolutionary stuff indeed.

Anonymous, 12 Jan 2018GSMArena why didn't you do you own digging before publishin... moreI posted the reason a few comments later :D. When the tester did the first test he didn't ran iOS 11.2 but iOS 11.1.2. The more aggressive behaviour was introduced on iOS 11.2, that's why he didn't noticed any performance issue until the 11.2.2 update.

GSMARENA you are a big mobile site. So it is you who should run the test and keep record for every IOS update on your same phone, then you can tell us.

How very convenient. Apple slowed down one of their most successful iPhones in order to force people to upgrade. Slowing down iPhone 7/s would have been too much, so they didn't do it.
There is nothing in the SoC itself that would dictate why A8 would slow down a lot, but A9 or A10 wouldn't.
Clearly a case of intentional obsoletion.

I think that the Spectre patch has nothing to do with the poor performance. The former iOS version, 11.1.2, isn't affect by the massive CPU downlock introduced on iOS 11.2 for iPhones with degraded battery. The tester jumped directly to 11.2.2, but I'm sure that the lower score on GeekBench is caused by the old battery and not by the latest patch.

Spectre update -40%, Apple slowing down CPU to the old battery -30% = 70% slowdown
Better swap with a Mediatek SOC for higher CPU performance

GSMArena why didn't you do you own digging before publishing something based on one persons result? I have tested my own iPhone 6 after patching and there is no drop in GeekBench and I have read other people over at PhoneArena saying the same thing. No drop.
If the CPU in A8 in the iPhone 6 would be affected by the patch we should most likely see it on all iPhone 6. More likely the patch triggered the battery slowdown on his phone for some reason.

Hmm, i'm interested how this will affect android devices, sd650 to be specific. Hoping it is just one of those patches where apple products take a big hit and open source just goes - "meh, we're still the best".
