By removing wired headsets, the companies avoid using quality DAC components, move quality digital to analogue conversion to headphones / speakers and it makes for them easier to place components. I don't like being exposed to unnecessary radiation, when listening to the music, no matter how small and safe it is. And a question from ignorant: can you have a FM radio without wired headsets acting as antenna?

Alien , 21 Jan 2018I'm going to buy a jackless smartphone ONLY when there won'... moreAnd yet there are still some funny people who said removing the 3.5mm headphone jack allow smartphone manufacturers to make thinner smartphones. But in the end, is the iPHONE X thin? NO OF COURSE NOT. I just wonder where do they get that logic from...

I'm going to buy a jackless smartphone ONLY when there won't be any phones with a 3.5mm jack available to buy. Period.
Same thing applies to SD Card slot.
So I don't worry too much. Sony and Sammy still use them. Those are the 2 brands I'm only interested in.
Maybe that's the future, but I fail to see what's the benefit of removing it.
You can still make waterproof phones with the jack included. My XZ Premium has it. The S8 has it. So stop bullshitting us and stop copying crapple.
If apple makes a phone that spits on you, everyone will want a spitting phone? Brainwashing in it's hight. Kinda scary to see how people are so easy to manipulate.
Bluetooth headphones = brain tumors and cancer!

It's a way forward in a way... If technology wants to evolve it can't do it this way. Why? USB Type C can't become a standard if everybody complains about the microUSB. Wireless audio or wireless anything can't get to the top if everybody wants a jack or wires. So, technology evolves so fast but nobody wants it, so they have to force you to use it until you get used to it and don't complain anymore...

The headphone jack is IMMATERIAL! The important bit i to have two ports - one for charging and one for audio output. The second port can be digital only, if that is what is considered important for progress.

1ns0mniac, 21 Jan 2018This is just another form of smart phone evolution. In the ... moreNo.
Adding an extra second headphone dedicated USB C is the future and evolution.
Cramping charging/otg/headphone functionality on just one USB port is...no evolution at all, just one big fat negative compromise.
Wireless charging would be welcome with only one USB option, but only if wireless charger included, not extra cost optional.
And bt headphones are no evolution also, as sound quality is seriously compromised as to wired ones ( except most expensive aptX HD or Ldac ones), need extra charging...it must be there as an option, not a direct and only approach.
Comprimising like this is not evolution. Evolution includes ease of use factor also.
Ease of use and comprimising are direct opossite.

Remove the headphone jack is ridiculous! It is not user friendly and annoying when you only can use the proper iphone headphone.

Anonymous, 21 Jan 2018 little bezel? Since when did how much bezel is visible hav... more"Separately, Google’s VP of product management Mario Queiroz told TechCrunch that the decision was made in order to make an all-screen device. “The primary reason [for dropping the jack] is establishing a mechanical design path for the future,” Queiroz said. “We want the display to go closer and closer to the edge. Our team said, ‘if weÂ’re going to make the shift, letÂ’s make it sooner, rather than later.Â’ Last year may have been too early. Now there are more phones on the market.”

Yes there are alternatives to the headphone jack socket but thats what they should stay as "alternatives" not replacement. Besides this is also used as an aerial socket for built in radios which i do find very useful and at almost no battery loss.

Removing something perfect is not going forward !!!!!! It is like you are hit by a BUS and you are in hospital; not able to move forward until someone gives you some knowledge therapy !
FORM FACTOR? how ridiculous.. Apple ipods have headphone jack but they are so slim, way slimmer than the phones which omits the jack in the name of form factor. Componentss are getting smaller and smaller, so space is just a lame excuse. A headphone jack is better than that gimmicky dual camera and gimmicky wireless charging. The biggest problem is wired headphones comes with no battery, unlike wireless solutions. How many things will we have to charge more? laptops, mobile or even two mobiles, maybe a tablet, a smart-watch.. now even a headphone?

It's one more example of switching from a simple and cheap solution of excellent quality to a complex and expensive solution of mediocre quality. The brands do that solely for money, not to improve anything.

Some say that removing the 3.5mm jack will improve sound quality, well I dont have the same experinence now that Inhave a iphone x. The sound from from apple earbuds is worse than before to me. Normally I am using Audio Technica M50 and Focal Sphear earphones. I bought bose QC35 II to give bluetooth a chance. Well they are not in par with M50s. So removing the jack did not improve quality also bluetooth earphones are not better. When you look on pics of iphonex you will see that there is space for a 3.5mm jack. So there is no real necessity to remove this universal jack. Except that some companies want to earn more money by making you buy more brand specific products. So F U apple.

I agree and admit it if removing headphones is way forward, honestly as Android users listen to music, videos etc seeming noisy and afraid of deaf, i would rather hope it without headset and hope other innovation.

Why jack should stay
1)not every phone has wireless charging
2)bluetooth drains battery faster
3)bluetooth earphones can be interupted (lost connection, accidentaly turned off bluetooth etc)
4)you have to carry more stuff (phone, earphones with usb c and a dongle)
5)currently no better alternate available
6)you have to charge your bluetooth earphones as well
