Beats Studio 3 Wireless headphones review

08 April 2018
Beats Studio 3 Wireless headphones with Active Noise Canceling (Pure ANC) represent the peak of Beats consumer offerings. Now packing Apple's W1 chip, we've been using these for a while now to see how they perform.

Same bitrate just different in how its resolved with hw. I hear mostly difference between com. and uncom. audio, but thats music I listen to often and on quality headphones. Difference is small, but in the end listening to higher res is better experience. I started on cheap earphones and can tell, I wouldn't be able to tell if its better quality with such. Well, only way to understand is for one to hear it.

Funk you with your wireless bs!
Now I have to worry about charging those as well?? Hell no!
I'll be using wired headphones until they don't make them anymore..

But iPhones (no matter what version you have) support only two codecs - AAC and SBC.
The only decent wireless Apple uses is Airplay, but that is really limited in terms of usability and higher latency.

I've tested the Bose & Sony bluetooth headphones & non support equalizer adjustment wirelessly. Seems like the digital wireless data is direct from file & not affected by the adjustment.

Phones I've tested with is Sony Z2, Z1 compact, Xiaomi Redmi Note3, Zenfone 2 & Huawei Mate10 (non pro).

vrvly, 08 Apr 2018You can hear difference between compressed and cd quality, ... moreit's noted that my source is own encoded flac files from my own cds or even a few high res 24bit 192khz flac files.

vrvly, 08 Apr 2018You can hear difference between compressed and cd quality, ... moreit's hard to tell the difference on ldac due to higher bitrate (unless in perfect listening conditions even) when compared to wired.

i have high resolution audio player, nw-zx100 ( not a phone), use xba-40 quad balanced armature and full size akg k551, but i have tested my friends mdr-x1000 with ldac mode, it's impressive and suffice most people unless your a super high end audiophile

regular bluetooth (4.2 or less) will sound compressed due to low bitrate at 320kbps, it's noted that iphone 8/x also supports newer bluetooth 5.0 which has high bitrate, will sound much better especially with lossless music files or higher quality streams due to higher bitrate at 600kbps (same as aptx-hd, but lower than ldac which is 990kbps), but i presume next generation beats or airpods 2 probably support this codec

The closer you get to a full audio bitstream the better.

ZloiYuri, 08 Apr 2018LDAC codec has 990 kbit/s bandwidth. I'm pretty sure you wi... moreYou can hear difference between compressed and cd quality, forget higher sampled dsd. And thats with wired connection, wireless is even worse. Sony also don't use wireless for audiophiles, see they offer top performing walkman and headphones with jack and other wired connectors, not just wireless. Though there are lossless wireless connections like allplay, airplay, playfi, dlna, ones used in sonos and sennheiser, none use such for headphones on the go even sony. Could find Sennheiser headphones and earphones(wireless) with lossless support, but they can be usen only at home, earphones are ugly and their hw performance is also limited so even with high quality brand, pricy products and "wireless" supporting lossless you wont get such quality as you get with wired connections.
Most you can do is connect your favorite wired headphones to wireless box(probably not running on battery) supporting lossless sound transfer.
If you cannot hear difference and its not hw, its either in your ears or in poorly made music.
Also brands selling such cheap hw presenting it as high quality looks then pretty funny, that is if you care.

I'm pretty sure you will not hear any difference on headphones. But people always forget a dark side of wireless audio. Amplifiers in headphones. Mostly they are way worst than in phones due to power limits. Good amplifiers are still power hungry. So you need install bigger and heavier accumulators in headphones, what is not good. So forget bitrate, it's not the worst thing in wireless music.

All wireless headphones are compromised due to lossy compression, aptx hd is only 546kbps and relies on reduced quantisation accuracy for mid to higher frequencies, ldac is better as it uses lossless compression as well as lossy compression at the expense of added latency but it's still not CD quality although it can come close.

Anyone who has used Bluetooth to transfer a file knows it's incredibly slow, Bluetooth should not be used for wireless audio, we should wait for a better data transfer protocol.

Unfortunately Apple was in a rush to get rid of the headphone jack and many android phone makers followed suit

In my opinnion, I better stick to a phone, that can use my Sennheiser HD598 with FiiO DAC and let me enjoy quality as much as I want than to always think where and how to charge the headphones.

Even when Jobs were still alive, he didn't bother improved the audio department of iphone; limiting the audio codec supported by ipod/iphone using copyright/piracy issues, ALWAYS giving out the CHEAPEST pair of headsets he could get from Chinese OEM...

Now when Cook took over, Apple becomes even worse, even asking for US$150 for a piece of junk called AirPod, which has NOTHING to justify its RIDICULOUS price, while intentionally got rid of the headphone jack to "force" isheep to buy those expensive junk to lessen the wear on lightning port.

And you expect Beats to made a Hi-Fi headphones SOMEDAY while Apple NEVER let its main business to produce "decent" Hi-Fi products?

This is the MAIN reason why NO well-educated people BUY Apple products, because ALL Apple products are made to be "exclusive, Apple-only products", so once u have a Apple product, u r forced to buy another Apple product to supplement the previous device, and, by the time u realized it, u r already spend a fortune, forcing urself (even the parents) to buy MOST of Apple products, like what happened to my niece!
