Processors and GPU are all the same for flagships, so no comment on that.
What gaming phones should be(at least for me)
Cooling system that in by no chance your phone will reach higher than 25 degree Celsius
Fluid UI and game interface.
Good refresh rate 60-150Ghz is ok.
Good speaker.
EXCELLENT SCREEN!!!
3.5MM OF COURSE. at least you can play while focused, it's a portable gaming console!!!
Even PSPs and handheld consoles have them.
GAMING MODE DO NOT DISTURN LIKE OF THAT IN OnePlus.

gaming phones will never have a proper future as do gaming pcs, unlike gaming pcs which are truly worldclass leading and have features that truly stand out gaming phones are nothing but gimmicks they will never have true gpu and true dedicated games to live with such trash only for the low ses people who cannot even play a proper dedicated game just some casual trash that cannot even make it

There is definitely a market for mobile gaming, look at Pokémon Go there are still casual, mid casual and pro gamers, point is, there is a market for it, but it's up to the manufacturer to find out what could be the advantage of mobile gaming.
-Sony's PS4 integration to a XZ or z5 premium can be one of those possible factors that can differentiate mobile gaming from flagship phones. yet it failed due to some missing ideas. (Really sony, have you ever read any of your fans comments? When will you stop loitering in the wrong path? eherm)
-Effective Cooling systems may be a feature. NO flagships had focused on that part yet, they have cooling systems but they still get hot.
-120Ghz is ok for offline games, but it is useless if mobile internet service is crappy.

Gaming phones do have a future but only if manufacturers take them more seriously. First, there should be distinction between gaming phones and flagships and that can be done by a few things like a distinct design with a slider type hardware controller (Sony Ericsson Xperia Play), an effective cooling system like the one introduced in Xiaomi Black Shark or the Razor Phone, 120 Ghz Refresh Rate displays which can be used only when gaming to save battery life, tough construction & build quality, 64 GB internal memory with dedicated SD slot as games these days consume a good junk of memory, 16:9 screen aspect ratio is much better for compatibility (I can see many old games not being updated to support newer screen aspect ratios), 3.5 mm jack (strengthened) is mandatory to game without disturbing anyone in the environment, front firing speakers, and of course huge battery like 6000 mAh as Android isn't a resource efficient OS. I like the idea of gaming phones but in my opinion, manufacturers haven't been able to get it right yet.

Answer is very simple.
PC for gaming cost 1000+ or at least 500 for playing oldschool games or new one at medium or poor quality.
Gaming sets like Playstation or Nintendo or Xbox cost also 300+
But in case a gaming phone can be any with at least 3GB ram and 32GB disk space.
For example Mi A1, or Huawei P9 lite etc. So for like 150 eur a gaming phone can be bought.
What i want to say phone is cheaper than the rest of the comparables above and work fine.
Its definitely have a future.
And about pure gaming phones?
Well in whole world are certain people who buy phone just for games. So yes it have the future.
Just for example Clash of Lords play"s over 50 million people worldvide and thats just one game. One for several millions.

Yes, but just a mod/higher-refresh-rate is not sufficient. You need an extreme case of a SoC speficically built for games. Like an Exynos9810 that can last in peak preformance blended with a 1.2times the power of Adreno 630. 2GHz LPDDR4X Memory, super cooling system. And mega optimised for low consumption while gaming.
I'd also be pleased to have that with a 3.5mm jack. With Front speakers.
Or like the Sony PLAY. A slideout controller for gaming.

People with budgets could be pleased with a gaming phone. Lets put it this way. Chipsets are expensive so a non gaming phone should be cheaper than a gaming phone.
However if you don't have a budget a gaming phone is useless and ugly.
For example just buy a galaxy s9+ if you got money.

Few years back Samsung had come up with a phone which was like a camera with calling functions. It was discontinued after 2 iterations.
I don't think special gaming phones will have long life.

Short answer: yes.
Long answer: Gaming phones are supposed to cater to gamers. If computers are in any way a valid reference point, you have, generally speaking, three tiers in terms of increasing specifications: business, entertainment, then gaming.
So gaming phones should have the highest specifications, but you already have flagship phones that have the highest specifications. So the only difference would probably be in focus. Flagships tend to incorporate the newest aesthetics - this is generally the focus for flagships. This means compromises in specifications. Whereas gaming phones focus on hardware.
Now, on to the mobile gaming scene: It is a disaster. The most prevalent model is the microtransaction model. Two virtual currencies where one of them is the 'premium', purchases that grant the purchaser benefits that may or may not lead to an objective advantage in gaming (pay to win), possible time-tested strategies that open new venues of revenue, and/or aggressively push the gamer into investing in such. Though a new, better model may be presenting itself at this time, games are, in the end, a time and energy sink. Let that sink in.
So that brings to my assessment: can gaming phones have other uses? To me, sure. The question is: to what extent can such phones make computers obsolete/eclipse computers? Can you use a gaming phone for, say, video editing? As an emulator/runner of game consoles or alternative operating systems? Can you use it as a server, or as, in any capacity, a supercomputer? If not, can a relatively small number of such devices, when used for a common purpose (example: BOINC) match the processing power of a supercomputer? Last point: Is it even necessary? If not, can it find a niche? As it is, such phones are being pushed as gaming devices. Will this suffice? Time will tell.

Reading the comments here and I'm seeing Sony finally being recognized for what they're good at.
I guess their new CEO will bring Sony back to where they have started and emerge on the top again.
Meanwhile, gaming phones should have 6" or larger screens with no curved edges like Samsung flagships do.
Gaming with a laptop screen is quite hard already, imagine doing it with a smartphone screen.
And for folksake, I wish OEMs would consider the 6" 18:9 small bezel screen devices as titan phablets (like the old way), 5.5" 18: small bezel screen devices as normal phablets, and 5" 18:9 small bezel screen devices as standard-sized smartphones.
Smartphone is all about pocketability, and the aim of 18:9 ratio screens and small bezels is to reduce the overall footprint of a phone with the same screen size as the older generation of smartphones.

Yes but they need some sort of controller adaptation, - Bluetooth keyboard/mouse or ps4/xbox controller , playing PUBG on mobile is fun but the controls are to clunky

XZ2 Premium will be the best gaming phone.
120Hz oled WRGB, best audio, SD845/846..
Yeah, there is rumor of a S846 ( XZ2 P and Pixel 3) . Weaker cores would be 1.9 instead of 1.7GHz.
Super Slow motion will be updated again. Both sensors have the DRAM.

The time is right. Kids growing up with handhelds and consoles are now adults, willing to buy this things. And yes i owned a xperia play, vita, psp, bluetooth controllers. And every now and then i google for xperia play 2. Sony needs to wiseup!

No. Bcoz the chipset tjey have is already available on other devices. Its not that they are superior in performance than other. No point in having seperate gaming phone.
Only thing is they may have better speaker/s and maybe some cooling. But that dosent make them radically different

Yoir article didn’t mention Xiaomi liquid cooling. As a true gamer myself (ps4+vita+switch+iPhone) I’m looking forward to Black Shark with dedicated gaming mode plus liquid cooling.
True gamers know that liquid cooling is not a gimmick, every device out there becomes very hot when you play heavy games under some time, and this is very bad for the internal hardware and the battery. People who don’t use the phone for gaming will never need liquid cooling, but true gamers will care.
And get real, nowadays there are true games on mobile, I’m playing a bunch of them, they are console quality nowadays, you can’t distinguish a mobile game from a console game unless you are comparing a Xbox one X AAA in a 4K TV with HDR (very few titles to compare) and a poor phone. Games are becoming more and more optimized for mobiles processors, metal, snapdragon etc. Any iPad today is faster than a MacBook for gaming today, and i never had a Snapdragon 845 but i believe it must be pretty fast too according to AnTuTu and Basemark.
