Sunday debate: Bigger battery or slimmer phone?

Give me a 15,000 mAh in a 12mm body and I wouldn't mind. Sure, if some battery tech manages to cram big capacity in a thinner body that's welcomed, but a thin 6 mm phone is hard to grasp and with a mediocre 3,000 mAh it can't last a whole day. Battery life all the way, that's why I'm holding to my Lenovo P2 until I find a worthy successor.

Always battery first. Thin phones aren't nice to hold, so there's that too.

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2018Anhd it's not just better battery, but better cooling, even... moreProtruding cameras are not design fail as long as the camera sensor is worth it. Sadly it's because people would not be happy with the whole phone being that thick even with a better battery.
Actually sadly enough.... if most people were forced to pick up a slightly thicker phone with a beefier battery and a larger camera sensor most wouldn't be able to tell the difference. And then grow to love it for camera and battery.
But no....

Battery size. Unless we are calling 6mm thin phones they can fit enough juice in there. And nobody would care or notice the difference if a phone was8 to 9mm.
And many phones can fit larger capacity batteries in than they are.
So anyone saying thinnes over batteries or using die shrinks and battery density as an excuse for companies to skimp on battery capacity is simply wrong.
Cause even if you chose thinnes... again the phone isnot actually that much thinner. Just lacking battery capacity or overly fragile

My take is, as long as the phone doesn't exceed 9mm thiccness, they should try to cram as much mAh into that space.

I'd rather have a 1-1.5cm or even 2cm thick phone with great battery life than one of those fragile, screaming for food all day long phones like a stupid kid..

androfox, 11 Jun 2018A 8mm thick phone can easily hold 4500mAh and more. 1cm is ... moreIf Xiaomi or Huawei came up with a 16 000mah battery phone, i'd buy it even if it has mid-range specs at the price of a flagship (Well as long as they don't make stupid misstakes, like poor audio quality from the earpeace, loudspeaker or the 3.5mm jack, unreliable GPS or GSM reception, dim screen or something like that. Manufacturers rarely care about alll the things at once).

None both are annoying. Or rather both.
A big battery with a slim phone. You get this by having a replaceable back that also doubles as a charger/battery.
Every phone comes with two said packs turned charger in pack.
With AC -> DC converter having turned to absolute minauture lately, you can embed it to your phones back, along with the battery of course.
Throw away charger and cables , they're legacy AF. Basically your phones back pops up a plug (when removed) and charges while you use the phone with the other back and vice versa.
The fact that we charge phones as if we live in Nintety-freaking-Two... *still* is telling.
Also you can have those chargers with you (once done fast charging) and pop them back (once you main battery starts dying).
*Boom* no battery anxiety, no need to keep the phone thick (you always have a secondary battery, your charger, w you), replaceable if it dies, no need to restart your phone while you make the swap (a tiny internal 200 mah batt keeps the lights on).
Now go back in time and have your useless deabtes. The tech is here (miniaturized AC to DC) we just need another Steve Jobs to have the guts to make a beautiful implementation. Current battery life of phones ia attrocious and a great opportunity for a businessman who likes to use what is new in tech and not what is 30 years old...
Bye.

A 8mm thick phone can easily hold 4500mAh and more. 1cm is NOT thick but a good size gripping a phone. Hold the moto z or Oppo R5 once (both ~5mm) and you feel how fidly and flimsy these phones feel. Of course the feel like engineers worked alot to afford such thinness and they feel valuable as well, still my sausage-fingers aren't created by whoever to lift such thin things from any flat surface (as a table). I could even go with a 1,5cm thick phone if it runs 16.000mAh (Energizer Power Max P16K Pro) AND if it was smaller than 5". Theres a huge difference between a 6,5" phone with 1cm and a 4,5" with 1cm. I wish theyd go back to smaller sized, thick, long lasting phones. I would buy into it.

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2018Guys.. mAH is deceiving, it alone does not measure how long... moreHave you seen the difference on the 13k battery phone, against the 4k phones? Not really that much difference in thickness or size. But shamesung still can't figure out how to put a bigger battery in their flagships.

Who said thinner is better looking? A smartphone is not an anoxeric model and it shouldn't be.
The thinner it is, the more fragile and less grippy it also is.
I wouldn't mind at all a thicker body for the sake of battery's life.

suarez92, 11 Jun 2018You really stare at your phone for 9 hours , that's so sad....You don't need to. Pkay radio streams in 4G and it will drain the battery even faster than if you stare at it. GPS navigation - same.

Battery life is combination of software and hardware efficiency and since battery tech moves forward the slowest, the only way to have decent battery is to have at least 3500mAh-4000mAh. I don't mind thicker phones, but something like Oukitel K10000 Max is starting to be way too thick, so there is a limit to thickness too. Something like the Lenovo P2 is just right in term of battery life and thickness.
