Sony Xperia designers talk about camera, screen and thinner bezels

12 June 2018
They seek to find a balance - to deliver thinner bezels, without compromising ergonomics or the phone's other features.

defending their mistakes. and then.. later.. following the others.
    those designers are very unprofessional

Just get bigger batteries...the rest is ok enough

Kudos to sony! In terms of camera, it's a no doubt- it's Sony! Always ahead! For the screen, having bezel-less or no bezel phones compromises some of its true functionality and quality. I think what they did to sony XA2 in terms of its increased screen to body ratio is just perfect (Not saying that the previous phones are not). For me, it also what makes sony differ from other brands. The same designs nowadays with the notch and infinity display kinda make them so generic and what sony designers had stated as becoming "stale". With XZ2's design, I think its very elegant, though there are still some areas that need improvements. Not a fan of 18:9 screens, but, overall it's a great, good-looking, built quality device. It's a beauty inside and out. I am so excited to see the future designs of sony xperias.

The problem with these kind of defences is that sooner or later they will do the same thing as others, then either ignoring what they sad before, or try to defend it by some strange reasoning that doesn't hold up.

Sony has made several mistakes with their current line-up, so the reception has not been what they hoped for.
Trying to defend why they are the way they are, will not do anything for their sales.

They have devices that are better priced than what some of the other "classic" brands offer.
So in that regard, perhaps the money they saved on not perfecting the hardware was put to good use in lowering the price.
The issue though is that there are alternatives out there.
Perhaps they should have kept the "no flagship" strategy, to try to get the prices really low. Qualcomm keeps making mid-range chipsets better and better with each generation, so at some point for the people not playing games on their phones it would not make any real difference if the chipset is the flagship range or mid-range.
Unfortunately for Sony, both Motorola and Nokia are now two classic brands occupying much of the market Sony could have aimed for... and there are many new brands in that market as well...

The only slightly unique offering that Sony has, is the "compact" flagship with smaller screen and good battery-life. But that has unfortunately grown with the latest generation. And those bezels not only makes it seem a bit out of date, is also means that it is quite close in size to other offerings with larger screens.
I hope they try harder to get that concept right. And I do think chips like the SD710 makes it so that they don't necessarily have to go for the flagship chipset. However, I'm not sure if that chipset is that much cheaper compared to the SD845, so it would make any relevant difference in terms of end price of the unit.
The display size does have an impact on battery-life, but it still has to have small bezels, there is no point in making a device that is as big as others offerings, just with a smaller screen to give slightly better battery-life... Both the screen and the body needs to be compact, if they are going to use the smaller screen trick to extend battery-life.

In terms of removing the headphone jack.
There are some points to it, for those that care about sound quality. But then there should not be any headphones in the box, and no adaptor, unless it/they are of really high quality and surpass the performance of the typical 3.5mm offerings we used to have.
Most included adaptors have absolutely no sonic benefits over the 3.5mm jacks that used to be on the unit itself.
Here I think GSMarena could do a better job however, explaining that the (all?) adaptors are actually DACs with headphone amps in them, and that the figures are irrelevant if the user would consider replacing the included one with a higher quality offering accessory.
Android has supported external DACs for several versions, so that isn't really anything new, but the "adaptors" are much smaller in size compared to most typical DACs. But there has been headphones out there for a while that can connect directly to the USB plug with the DAC built in to them.

As for aspect ratio, well 16:9 is a standard. But if the screen has rounded corners it needs to be larger to keep full image in 16:9. And if the area left when rounded corners and notches are removed is at least a 16:9 area, then there is no real argument for not extending the display beyond 16:9.
Phones aren't mainly video consumption devices so any benefits for other uses are welcomed. If rounded corners or notches gets in the way of video watching, well then I would argue that those downsides can be major ones for form users, but that is easily solved by just extending the display a bit more.

As for stereo vs mono speakers. Built in speakers are generally quite bad. they distort heavily. Many offerings have had issues with maximum sound-pressure, making them quite useless in any scenario where there is other sound, thus not even working for background music, and many times not even loud enough to work for the ringtones. The perceived stereo effect from a small phone is limited.
If there are compromises that have to be made either in terms of bezels and/or loudness of the speaker in going from mono to stereo, I would argue for mono any day.

DarK, 12 Jun 2018they should fire their current designers ... do all of them... moreSony went Nuts. That's what happened. Totally agree with the camera part and why are they keep making their phones thicker without giving a reasonable feature/a bigger battery?
and they did not make the bezels thinner because it will interfere with the camera & earpiece ? really ?? is it SONY that is saying this ? at least watch what others are doing (not talking about the notch here)

also, "smartphone designs are getting stale" ? ah.. did they mean 'Xperia smartphones' ? I mean look at their current smartphone lineup. My last xperia was Z3 and I loved that design at that time. and honestly, its still better than their latest offerings in terms of design.

            ah... I feel relieved !!

Anonymous, 12 Jun 2018Sony is like the Kenny Omega in the smartphone world. in the past yes they were but now they are horrible .. look i used to be Sony fan i had SonyEricsson K800i,Satio u1i,Xperia Arc then Sony Xperia Z2 but after that the market got better and better and Sony still stuck on 2014 where companies stopped with megapixel race and started to focus on Camera quality while Sony still going for megapixel count now with Xperia XZ2 the design look nice but it has horrible flaws 1-placement of fingerprint scanner 2-thick phone with less battery 3. loosing 3.5mm jack with no added benefit to the device and their camera still not on iPhone X,Pixel 2 and Samsung S9 league in term of quality even though those phones using Sony sensor ( mind blowing )

Melt-down, 12 Jun 2018They are just making excuses for the lack of headphone jack.Hi...

Someone that works at Sony told me that engineers got orders from above to remove the jack.
It is due to the fact Sony is selling more wireless than wired headphones.

Yes, the phone has 11mm, but near the frames the thickness is 6mm.

And the bulky bezels are the exact reason as to why I won’t buy a Sony phone this year!

Sony had GOOD DESIGN already, it was UNIQUE, I dont get when people complain about OMG BEZELS, when theres other phones out there that do that, and you have to grab them with freakin tweezers or your fingers will block the screen, same with 18:9 what is the poing of having black bars on your multimedia content.

They need to just stick to what they do well and offer every flagship feature at a competitive price point. Then people will buy. I'm fine with not using OLED, but an XA2 Ultra with stereo speakers, slightly bigger battery and a better processor at $399 would sell like hotcakes. Sony has everything they need to sell. They just mess it up
