Sunday debate: Faster charging vs wider support

22 July 2018
Is it better to have proprietary standards or should we stick to Quick Charge and USB-PD?

Geric.770, 23 Jul 2018S8 is great, but it's still freaking expensive here in Phil... moreWell you need to find the right brand for that, which is mostly made by Xiaomi:
With USB C + QC 3.0 support:
1. Mi Note 2 4/64GB SD821 17,449Php
2. Mi 6 6/64GB SD835 20,999Php
3. Mi 5s Plus 4/64GB SD821 15kPhp
4. Mi Note 3 6/64GB SD660 17,449Php (Not a flagship when based on SoC)
Other phones brand (but not recommended):
1. LeTV

USB C + QC3.0 support were not that rare, they're everywhere one thing that you need to do is to widen your search perspective.

S7/edge are one of the best implementations. I don't know if I can buy one here since it is out of stock! T_T

Huawei Mate 9? Second hand units only. Lmao.
LG V20? Also second hand units available! X(
HTC 10? Already out of stock too.

Geric.770, 23 Jul 2018Lol. I already said it there. "Midrange"!What I mean was that you can buy a full spec old-flagship phone for the price of a new midrange. There's no need to wait, man, why can't you get it.

USB-PD. umm, isn't part of the reason we support android is the ubiquity, open source and universal serial bus? isn't having a proprietary charging end with USB on the other, like apple or the mentioned companies kind of like having one foot on one side of the fence and the other on the other side of the fence? reminds me of the US imperial measurement system. why can't we just go metric all the way already? geez, it's expensive buying two sets of tools. i have tried using metric where i can like using my weather app in celsius. the formula to calculate fahrenheit is easy. multiply the temp by 9/5 or 1.8 and add 32 = fahrenheit. come on already. USB-PD or the fastest standard that still uses usb-c on both side but doesn't heat up battery. that is another thing. we need OEM's to make phones with swappable batteries again. isn't it funny how they sealed up the phones, made them more fragile, made them much harder to fix and liable to break if it indeed does need a fix and they aren't water resistant after you open up anyways and RAISED the prices on phones a huge percentage when phones were becoming commodities and prices were starting to come down on parts and phones? ridiculous. i am still using my galaxy note 4 and LGv20 because i can change batteries. i still have 3 left for each one. i'm not paying $1000USD for the galaxy note 9 if i can't change the battery. sorry samsung but you aren't apple and if you were you could charge $50 and i wouldn't buy your over hyped and under engineered lowest bidder gets contract phones. you know what lowest bidder parts are? cheap cheap cheap. iphone is easily the worst phone that needs repairs because it breaks so easily.

DroidBoye, 23 Jul 2018You mean old flagships?Lol. I already said it there. "Midrange"!

I prefer faster proprietary charging not because they're "fast", it is a given, but because the proprietary charging that I know of such as OPPO's Dash or VOOC charging is heating up the brick charger than the phone itselt while QC 3.0 that I have with my phone seems to have 40+ degrees C of fast-charging temperature on the phone as a standard which is not ideal for Lithium batteries especially when you're living in the tropics.

Faster, of course. Time is more precious than any phone could ever be.

Still waiting for midrange phones to adapt at least USB C ports and support QC.

The authorities should insist on removable batteries or fine producer's.
All else is a waste and pollution.
                      Fast charge destroy longevity.

1.Fast charge with Big battery is the best because you can fully charge in short time from your home and no need to borrow your friends charger (something like Super charge+6000mAh would be good).
2.Standard quick charging is very unlikely because your friends may use lightning, mini usb, micro usb, usb c chargers or wireless charging.
3.The best solution to date is Moto Z with 2 battery mods so you can attach 1 mod and enjoy your phone while charging another battery(the include charger can simultaneously charge the phone and mod too).

Proprietary charging with qualcomm quick charge as backup would be great OPPO, Oneplus, Huawei having their charging method as the main but also have quick charge as backup (if its seperate from SoC if not qualcomm should make it) so when you have their chargers it will charge at maximum speed but if not connecting to other charger wont slow down speed much

Fast charging is better only when you can use it with any USB cable around you. I don't want to carry expensive proprietary chargers like I did 10+ years ago!

So either wide fast charging support, or a phone that can charge with anything (wired or wireless) reaching a full charge in under 3 hours.

Faster is better anyday. Just try any latest Huawei or OnePlus phone, and you'll get mad at how slow Samsung phones charge (they're still using ancient QC 2.0 standard just for safety reasons).

The VHS vs Betamax comparison is really not a very good one when he goes on to state that the superior standard would win, as actually the inferior won to most people's minds. Having lived through it I agree with most people that the inferior standard won. At the end of the day countdown to superior marketing not the best standard.

USB-C is an Apple standard so of course some people wouldn't want to use it. Read the design requirement and it is just a follow-up to Lighting: omnidirectional connector, fast charging, supports audio and video out.
