      Sony do the best camera sensors, but the photos taken on Sony phones are not that good, sony is terrible at the software part.

Only until the XZ1. And you're right, just after I sent my comment I thought about the Pixel 2's camera. It's a fantastic camera indeed. I like Sony, always had an attraction for the phone brand. But even if their camera is good now, why do they have to make a fat and heavy phone with too much of a rounded back and low camera lens and very low FPS? Why Sony why? I have the iPhone 8 for almost a year and love it. But at second place comes Sony even before Samsung, LG, HTC.

                So the megapixel race starts again

                    First of all, you forgot to mention Google, with the Pixel 2 having a better camera than both the best Apple and Samsung have to offer.

                    And I bet you haven't used the newest Xperias when you say they still are among the worst smartphone cameras. The XZ2 is as good or better even than the regular S8 most of the time. The XZ2 Premium only seems to improve on that.

                            I remember a couple of years ago Sony started with the high megepixel race. Their camera was and is still one the worst imo. I think it's lack of OIS and software processing. The only manufacturers that are able to put satisfying quality phone cameras are Apple and Samsung. I hope Sony will finally have a camera that can compete with the two giants.

It is not difficult as such to make a large area sensor, BUT to have a lens that can supply light evenly and non-distorted across the entire area, in a device as thin as modern phablet. THAT is a challenge.

                                And the higher resolution, the smaller the pixels. And for these to make sense we need distinguishable waves that requires a faster lens, and this again is hard in a thin body...

                                  Wish the sensor was still bigger at maybe 1/1.5", since it's just a single camera anyway, or instead add another camera, could either be a 3x telephoto zoom lens or a greater than 100° wide angle lens, since the phone isn't going to be any thinner than 9mm anyway.
