I mean weren't they always?
Everything you do with a smartwatch, you can do with a phone better.
Redundant is the word.

the evolution of smartwatch is the same with minor update. Not much changes and innovation among competitor. Power management not reliable for long-term usage. Perhaps smart watch should come with renewable energy through a sustainable ideology. Just like ordinary watches build in solar energy for better power reserve.

The reason why smartwatches haven't taken off is because they're too damn thick! Seriously, phone manufacturers keep making phones thinner (at the cost of battery), why can't they do the same for smartwatches? The current ugly designs and monstrosities are cumbersome to wear.

When they make a smart watch better than my 'Comlink' which is paired to my car 'KITT', I'll buy one.
It also has 2 way voice comms, a micro camera and It's my daily driver.
I've only charged it once in 1982 and it still has 55% battery left.

The reality is, sadly, the "smartwatch" has not moved forward from it's initial launch, already years ago. If you look at the specs, they remain largely unchanged; large, clunky, limited functionality, dependent on the proximity of the phone you are (already) carrying. Unless there is a significant C-change in what they are designed to do and their size (14mm thick is unacceptable!), they are indeed, DOOMED like Edsel.

The technology behind smartwatches is not evolving to the extent that it should. Technology upgrades should not be limited to IPXX ratings, inclusion of NFC, upgraded chipset, etc.. Manufacturers should be focusing on what is in it for consumers and how their products will continue to contribute in improving to the lives of consumers.

A category waiting for its iPhone moment. I mean 2008 (or is it 2007?) when the iPhone literally put all other smartphones to the pasture with its innovative features.
So it's not dead. Just waiting for the time when hardware make it feasible for features like long battery life that users of smartphone always wanted. And software that make using a smartwatch as smooth as that of a smartphone.

No, it's not dead. However, it's still rather close to a niche market considering that they still have rather specialized and rather limited functionality. Once they can perform all the functions of the smartphone and have way better battery life, it might take off from being a niche product.

Pro tip: don't even look at the "phone on your wrist" models like Apple Watch, Android Wear, Samsung watches.
Buy actual smart watches that were properly designed and have a proper battery life like Garmin Fenix series.
