Weekly poll: Are in-display fingerprint readers the future?

19 August 2018
We've gotten used to fingerprint readers on the back, but mid-range phones with in-display readers are incoming. Is it just a fad?

Disadvantage would be
if your screen is broken you cannot unlock your phone too.

Anything what will make phone with 100% body-to-screen is a future, so yeah in display fingerprints it is a future

I don't mind any iteration. Built-in display is probably the most convenient.

Fingerprint readers on the front of the phone are much more convenient. With the fingerprint reader on the back, if you have to unlock your phone while it is laying on the table and you are working on your laptop, then you have to pick it up and hold it properly which is cumbersome if all you wanted to do was change a quick toggle or something similar. An increase in reaction time from 100 ms to 250 ms is not such a big deal if I can get my fingerprint reader on the front of the device.

Anonymous, 20 Aug 2018Fingerprint scanner is faster because for slide to unlock, ... moreOnly 3 seconds won't make difference at all.

Well, there is very little chance that it might distort the quality of display in long term, not sure about it though. But I do wish OEMs to work on speed, and more accuracy of ID finger print scanner and on battery life also. I think it is safe for us to call it a future cos it can lead to creation of the full all-screen bezel less display beautifully.

Of course its future but I do not mind as long its works well and I as know, on screen fps has big size that may affect the battery size

                  the future,
                  1. fully optical circuitry
                  2. human machine interface, both visual and audio wirelessly send directly to the brain and let the brain process, then output from the brain are sent back wirelessly, thanks to the nanotech, quantum computing, and analog bio computer
                  3. human brain will be "borrowed" for encrypted background under conscience quantum computing, transparent to the user, for virtual servers

... humanity ... are we ready? absolutely NOT ! but, we can not do anything ...

I don't know if anyone has already mentioned it, but with the fingerprint sensor going under the screen, a few things need to be considered:
                    1. Does it affect the quality of the display in the long term, and how many uses is the sensor rated for?
                    2. What should smartphone makers do with the extra real estate in the back, now that they have more of it, due to the freeing up space?
                    3. Can the sensor for the fingerprint also double as some kind of health checking meter, for added benefits? Or as a sound sensir for seeing in pitch black environments?

best location, in my opinion, for the fingerorint scanner is on the side. you dont have to lift it up if its placed on the table to access the back. you dont have to smudge the screen if its on-the-screen and creates more space if its not below the screen

The title should change. It is not the future. Its available in the present time already. Just like how capacitive fingerprint scanner were slower when it first came out, this in-display scanner will only get faster in future iteration. One of the first capacitive fingerprint sensor was not even one-touch kind of scanner; you need to swipe your finger back then. These day the new generation probably forgot password and pattern even exist. Hahaha.

The traditional fingerprint scanner we used now is more secure and reliable to use.

Betch, 20 Aug 2018To be honest, I don't really care where the fingerprint sca... moreThe fast and reliable is in... In display finger print!

FP scanner being in the back I find the best. Easy, quick, fun and atleast in my case the most practical as I keep the phone in hand.
The talking point how 'phone is on the table and can't access the scanner' is quite an empty argument.

Anyway, in-display fingerprint scanner falls in the same category as the notch. It's nothing revolutionarily great, fancy or much worthy of praise. Hope it's not the new thing.
Only tells how the smartphones have reached their top and now the industry ties to push new waves of brainfarts with some companies having a "weekly" release of a new phone = Xiaomi/oppo etc.

Anonymous, 19 Aug 2018Slide to unlock is the best as I don't have any secret info... moreFingerprint scanner is faster because for slide to unlock, you have to press the power button to wake the phone up and then slide on the screen. That's one more step.

To be honest, I don't really care where the fingerprint scanner is supposed to be located, I just need it to be fast, reliable and that's it.
