Counterclockwise: Xiaomi shows $300 is all a flagship needs to cost

26 August 2018
The Mi 5 and Pocophone are proof enough. Even so, we think the Mi Mix is the most important phone that Xiaomi ever built.

What xiomi loses on profit margin of their phones, they gain by collecting and selling our data to chinese government.

Anonymous, 26 Aug 2018I am a total Android fan, but MIUI's ads are something whic... moreThe ads are only present in some specific apps that come along in the phone and can be totally avoided by using alternatives. And seriously?? Hours to set up a new phone? It takes a mere 15 minutes for the basic setup and is the same as any other android phone out there.

Story is not that simple ..

                - Chinese brands have two UIs, one for chinese market ( without google stuff) and another global. The local UI has adds, they show up like those adds inside free apps. They get paid for it. This bad UI is why they boost ram, bad optimization.

                - They do not work in as many countries as Apple, Samsung, Sony, LG, Motorola and Htc. They do not have to keep operations worldwide.

                - Many have their phones built in China, but the foreing ones have employees and project development in other locations like USA, Korea, Taiwan and Japan/Sweden. Employees in these locations cost more than in China.

                - Some of them cut costs by using screens from BOE, cameras Omnivision or Samsung, lack of nfc or usb c.

                - They copy a lot, it is cheaper than creating.

hope that your success won't bring higher prices later , such as every single company that went in smartphone business , begins cheap , then becomes greedy .

Anonymous, 26 Aug 2018Some phones cost more than $300 to be made. So if they sell... moreI am a total Android fan, but MIUI's ads are something which do not get discussed enough by reputed reviewers such as GSMArena's. I was shocked when I bought an MIUI phone for someone in the family (basic user). It tooks hours to configure it to shut up.

To someone who does not have the time and knowledge to tinker with MIUI, even an iOS phone may seem like an upgrade from a Xiaomi. That way, Xiaomi is doing a great disservice to Android's reputation.

AnonD-762416, 26 Aug 2018Most brands use the same or equivalent factories as Xiaomi,... moreXiaomi and Huawei are elwctronics companies, but they do not have divisions like LG, Samsung and Sony.
So they can cover eventual money loss.

Chinese brands use many local.suppliers like BOE.

Iphone X is far from being best out there, but it costs almost $400 to be made.
With all software support, advertising, costumer service ( international warranty) , do you think Apple could afford selling iPhones for $450?

Xiaomi and Huawei push phones with old cpu ( SD625 and Kirin659), redmi do not have nfc nor usb c. Honor flagships are worse than other flagships from last year and still cost same.

Regular costumer does not even know the difference between A8+, Redmi 5Plus, Moto G6+ except design and brand. They think all are equal then end up with cheaper.

What works in case of Xiaomi is - it delivers at affordable cost, no hype and no cheating.

OPPO VIVO started as affordable phones and gradually increased the prices, but what remained constant is their delivery of craps. Their premium sibling One+ did something similar. It tried bieng Apple of Android world.

Xiaomi will sustain due to the very fact that it has balance of affordable and premium products. Premium products too are not overly priced and not they are hyped up like One+.

AnonD-762416, 26 Aug 2018Most brands use the same or equivalent factories as Xiaomi,... moreDon't blame America. Blame the system that works well

This is good for costumers, keep it up Xiaomi! The more store you open, the more job opportunity you create.

Companies have overhead, which consists of business costs. These expenses are constant regardless of the quantity of goods or services produced. Employees want their checks, buildings require maintenance, etc. Additionally, a profit has to be made. These companies are not manufacturing high-end devices for their health.

Proper flagship devices (which don't cut corners), are well within reason when priced expensively. If the price is a major concern, you have no business looking at devices in the upper echelon class. Purchase a midrange, and move on. Or budget accordingly to buy what you want.

The money I plan to spend for Samsung's foldable device has been readily available since early 2018, as I was expecting it to release first quarter. I didn't have the full amount right off the bat. I had to save for it like any other hard working person does. I even had to recently add more money after hearing that the price may be higher than expected (~$1800+).

When you want a cutting edge device, which is built with premium materials, expect to pay a premium price for it. Xiaomi's devices are not in the premium class, and definitely not considered top-tier. They fall into the cheap category for a reason.

So if they sell... moreMost brands use the same or equivalent factories as Xiaomi, especially THE one charging the most for a slightly better than mediocre device. The idea that these budget brands doesn't make money was squashed this month, wasn't it? I think this particular brand posted a 2 billion dollar profit for the latest quarter? The reason they didn't post any profits before was always intended business. When you're prioritising growth it isn't a clever strategy to chase huge profit margins. Just look at Amazon, that company posted loss after loss for years until they were happy with the level of investments and now that company's owner is richest person ever. Sure, at the expense of borderline slave level wages for his employees, but still. That's unfortunately how consumerism works today. Give all the money to a handful super rich. It's the American model, why are you so upset about Chinese corporations doing the same?

Mi Mix's design originated back in 2014 with the Sharp Aquous Crystal (Idk the exact name) so Xiaomi isn't exactly first with this design, just to clarify since the article somehow implies that it is.
