Sunday debate: Curved vs. flat screens

25 August 2018
Curved or flat displays? Which make more sense and why? We look at the arguments for both in today's debate.

Sort by:

Curved screens are gimmick. It appears as if we have more screen, but in reality it's not at all imrpoves efficiency and is ergonomically not at all good.

All those who say that curved screens are great are simply those ones who know that they have been cheated / fooled yet are unable to accept the fact that they have been fooled with a hefty sum paid.

Even bezeless design is ergonomically not good.

Reminds me of my grand parents OLD CRT Curved TV's, thats why my last Samsung phone was the S7. After this Im going for some other brand.

While the Galaxy s6 Edge was an amazing design my subsequent move to a V30 with its only slightly curved screen was a big step up in ergonomics.

Gimmick then. Gimmick now. Glare, accidental touches, images looking narrower than normal, less usable writing s pen space, distortion and discoloration at edges, outside usability bad due to glares.

I have a Lg G6 and a Samsung S9.. I like the G6 more. Curved edges just create problems for viewing or selecting things.

My last curved screen was on my now broken S7Edge. I would never get a curved screen again. My current daily phone is a Midnight Blue P20 Pro. It has a flat AMOLED panel, and please don't tell me any other phone is prettier... or more usable.

If you are rich*: get a curved screen phone, no case, and an insurance.
The rest of us: flat is better ergonomics, more practical, and can use GLASS SCREEN PROTECTORS and decent phone cases instead of pricey insurance.

There's a reason people like MrMobile and Dave Lee preferred the practical LG G6 over the fragile-styled Samsung Galaxy S8.

*I'm talking yearly income of USD$70,000 or more.

No Notch. No curved display. No rounded display. All these tricks reduce the area of the display and lie to us that the inches are more. I love the classic shape of a rectangular display without chamfering. Like HTC U12+ and Huawei Mate 10 Pro.

i prefer flat screen all the way (one of the reason i never buy samsung flagship again)

As long as it isn't intrusive, like the early curved screens on Samsung devices some times were, I am all for curved edges. It works extremely well to make a phone stand out as it emphasise the sense of an all glass device.
There are plenty of design ideas that should be banned long before anyone starts touching curved edges. For instance the lack of core features like headphone jacks, NFC, water proofing. The addition of outright bad deign language as in notches and protruding cameras.

Flatscreen is the only way to go.. I dont know why they keep thinking we want curved junk.

Curved screens distort the image and make the smartphone screen protection using a protective film almost impossible.

                          Please stop with this idiocy.

I LOVE curved screens. So unique to Samsung and helps promote futuristic vibes.

As a Note8 user, I actually voted flat screen. If Note8 was not a powerhouse of a phone, I would not bother getting it. Curved screens distort views, increase glare, easier for breakage, and just so expensive to replace. I don't see any big benefits.

I bought galaxy S9 (first time Samsung user), the phone is amazingly good, except the curved screen and Samsung UI.

Great to see the "Curvster's" getting owned in the Vote

                                  **** Curved Phones

Man, I miss the times when smartphones were still PDAs and not just useless bloody jewelry.

Just wonder how skiny jeans and tight pocket one must have to not be able to fit flat screen in? The small pocket inside your jeans pocket is not meant for a smartphone. Its for a condom use solely.

as how you use the phone there is no diference betwen flat or curve glass.. just use it and u will "learn" how to use a curve display .. in terms of astetic.. well curve looks way better.. and lets be serious.. most of the time when you use ur phone you look at it.. so haveing a nice aspect is a +.. oh and in terms of durability .. is same thing.. u have huge chanses to crack the screen when you drop it whatever if the screen is flat or not . there are only benefits on a curved screen. if you think is harder to use i`m sure u guys didnt use one for too long.
