I agree the naming scheme is weird. IMO the 6xx series is the only one that males sense from Qualcomm. Mid range performance in mid range prices. Very much unlike SD 8xx series (mid range performance in high end prices) espec lately...
Both Kirin and Apple r*** Qualcomm's CPU.

At the footnote of GSMA's articles you will see Source & Via links (underlined).
If you clicked on Via,

"Thanks to the switch to the 7nm process, Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 is expected to offer significantly improved benchmark performance when compared to the Snapdragon 845 chipset.
Going by a recently leaked Geekbench listing, the Snapdragon 8150 will be more or less on par with the Kirin 980 and Apple A12 Bionic chipsets.
The Snapdragon 8150 prototype had achieved a single-core score of 3,697 points and a multi-core score of 10,469, points.
Apart from the improved benchmark performance, the upcoming mobile chip is expected to be more efficient as well, leading to battery life improvements.
The first smartphones powered by the 7nm Snapdragon 8150 chipset are expected to be announced in early 2019.

If I remember correctly performance & efficiency improvements are both ~30% on the SD845.
This is still at prototype stage, so still early days.

Go read Anandtechs in-depth review of the iPhone XS and its A12. They run the current top SoC through the SPEC2006 benchmark:
"The contrast to the best Android SoCs have to offer is extremely stark – both in terms of performance as well as in power efficiency. Apple’s SoCs have better energy efficiency than all recent Android SoCs while having a nearly 2x performance advantage. I wouldn’t be surprised that if we were to normalise for energy used, Apple would have a 3x performance efficiency lead"

But ofcourse there is more to good performance of a phone than a powerful CPU, most daily apps (fb, instagram and so on) are not very CPU intensive.

Or you can say the 980 is the same generation as this future SD flagship. But one fact is that the subsequest Kirin/SD chip always beats the latest Kirin/SD of the time.
It's same with Apple chips, you can say A12 and 845 are same generation because they came in the same year, or A11 & 845 are same generation because they came less than 6 months apart.
Again, it's all relative.

Then why the Snapdragon845 beats it's counterpar... moreTo your question: It doesn't, get your facts right. the only thing Androids were better is that they kept more apps in memory as they had 8GB RAM and the iPhone X with iOS 11 also had not-as-good RAM management. It improved with iOS 12, and now the iPhone X should be faster than any Android out there, because it was never ever beat in the first round, where raw performance mattered, and where the A11 Bionic beat out the SD 845 just because it was faster.

For a company that is focused on mobile processors it's a bit lame to see them trailing behind companies that only produce CPUs to power up their mainstream products. Qualcomm, as the largest manufacturer of mobile CPUs should be a pioneer in the field especially as most phone manufacturers rely on them. Sadly their newest offer, even if it will be on par with the competition, it's way to late ( probably huawei will have 2 releases with their new chips by then)
