Google confirms the Pixel 3 and 3 XL only have gesture-based navigation

10 October 2018
You should embrace the new gestures as Google isn't talking about the Pixels only.

This has implications for Android One phones who will probably with the Android 10 upgrade have to fully embrace this gesture based navigation. Those at Pie only with a choice have a better option.

JohnW1981, 10 Oct 2018I think at least Samsung will try to resist this, they want... moreAt least their gesture-based navigation is logical and isn't an Apple copy like Google's. And on Pie you can disable it.

Anonymous, 10 Oct 2018I LMAO when read a review of another device a while ago on ... moreGestures are easier for years. Had to root just to get that. Finally google adds it natively.

AnonD-632062, 10 Oct 2018See. This just proves it. Google is blindly following Apple... moreThere is nothing unuitive in pressing a button in a touch based device you regressive ....

Buttons and skeuomorphism should had been dead since early this decade. The soft button detour took 8 years away from intuitive use. Thankfully root and GMD solved it , but the stock experience was always so lacking. Finally google (through Apple) solved it.

I love it. I've been using gesture-based navigation since 2011 when I briefly had a Palm Pixi Plus. Then used it on Android by 2013 when I made my default launcher, Nova Prime. I knew five years ago that gesture control is the future and it took Apple to commercialize it.

I don't understand how Apple fanboys say Google is copying iPhone X when Apple copied many of Android's features and copied webOS, QNX, Meego, and BB10. Also, Chinese OEMs had gestures to wake the screen up. You can draw a letter and it sends you directly to a specific app. I used All-in-one Gestures, Lazy Swipe, and Nova's gestures for years and years.

Gesture navigation is another item added to people's notch, big bezels and no earphone jack phobias.

Google is mocking Apple, but they're pretty much doing everything that they do. I thought Android was about giving users the option to choose, but forcing people to go gesture based? Bad move, Google. Plus, the gestures on the iPhone feel much more natural, smoother and more fluid. I think what Google should have done is for every button in the navbar (Back, Home, Recents) give them all 3 seperate options, every button in the navbar should have a hold option, swipe up, swipe left/right option. For example: Hold on the Home button, Google assistant (yeah, we have that), swipe up will take a screenshot, swipe left/right will change the songs, do you get what I'm saying? There is an infinite number of possibilites, and Google has gone with this? I rooted my 2014 phone and gave it more functionality in the navbar and it really feels like a good change. So, for people that like to keep it simple, have the option to keep the gestures ON, but for people that want to make their devices more personal and more customized, have the option to turn gestures OFF. Simple as that

The Nokia N9 was purely gesture based, and it worked like a dream. It was very intuitive and natural. If Android can work like Meego, we should be fine.

The list of reasons not to buy a Pixel 3 is already very long... and now another reason to add to the list. GJ Google!

Whackcar, 10 Oct 2018I don't like the direction where Google is heading. They're... moreI think the same, That's the reason why I love android so much, THE FREEDOM!!

Samsung's gestures coming in Pie are the best navigation gestures

I don't like the direction where Google is heading. They're slowly becoming the second Apple.

They can screw up their Pixel phones as much as they want, i don't care. But they better not screw up Android OS for the rest of the OEMs. Android has always been about customization and full control over it's appearance and behavior. If it turns into iOS like crap, i assure them there will be a massive backlash.

Not sure if was Verge or Android Police.

The writer made critics on the phone for having virtual buttons. He stated that gestures are easier than just clicking the buttons.
That was very bias, probably an iPhone X user.

If I had to buy an iPhone, I surely would choose 8+ because of home button/FPS.
No way swiping to all directions and short/long press are easier than virtual buttons.
