Huawei Mate 20 Pro's face unlocking gets fooled quite easily

19 October 2018
Two guys with similarly short hair and beards, who aren't twins or even related, could both unlock the same phone with their faces.

Here goes the best excuse for the notch appearance...

software problem is more likely than that 3D facial thingy fault.

I think it's a tuning issue. They don't want the same problems that Apple have: change your makeup, cut your hair, have one night of bad sleep, or other things where the camera suddenly doesn't recognize you.

I think they will slowly adjust it to people's liking.

All my banking apps uses Face ID whereas with Android I was still forced to use PIN numbers on same apps(some) and not even the fingerprint reader. Passwords are saved using Face ID, just confirm and tap so simple. Android doesn’t even support 3D face scanning in full yet.

No excuses. This is a thousand dollar smartphone. It should be beyond secure, if you have the heart to charge that much for a smartphone, there should be zero to none flaws.

PS - Only similar looking people of China, Japan, Koreas aren't Asians.

Asia also includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Part of Russia, Nepal, Middle eastern nations(officially in Asia), and we people look very different and distinct unlike the likes of Chinese etc.

And that's probably the problem with mate 20, it was trained on Asian faces :p

Any facelock gets fooled even the mighty faceID.
If you make a 3D model face and do aggressive work, the system won't tell a difference.
That's why only the eye scanner is the strongest one.

the two of them looks similar, they should of used some else face other than one of them then test it and see, on my mate 10 pro face unlock works with me wearing my glasses or not but I did the scan without it, however no one else can unlock it with Thier face other than my twin, this is no test there's no unique person features on this earth we all have a doppelganger

"Still, it's a bit baffling that something like this got past the internal testing in the Chinese company's labs."

Baffling that Hauwei couldn't implement it's own idea and actually bring it to fruition?

I need to say this first: I am not defending Huawei. IMO we should focus on perfecting more reliable security tool - fingerprint scanners. But to the point now.
Apple had the same issues with iPhone X, when the FaceID couldn't tell a kid from a parent, can't handle twins, or Chinese co-workers. Huawei seems to have identical issue, cause these 2 guys look very similar, don't make the glasses fool you.

In short: for now face unlock is garbage, no matter if 2D or 3D.

The 2 guys doors look similar to a certain degree (perhaps enough to make the phone think they are the same person).

But the thing is, if that face unlock thing is not that great, then getting the "ugly" notch would be for no good reason.
