Sony posts record profit, but sold only 1.6 million phones in Q3

The amount shrinks in half on a yearly basis, but overall FY Q2 and H1 results are good.

CEO Yoshida will probably dissolve or sell off the Sony mobile division in the not too distant future.

Unless you're a diehard Sony fanboy who loves the 'Sony' brand, there just aren't enough compelling reasons to spend your money to buy an Xperia phone - there are other phones with better features or better value.

And because other Sony businesses (e.g. Playstation, cameras) are doing well, there's no effort and no urgency to fix the mobile division.

    XZ3 launched on October, the 3rd quarter is a summary for July to September. Let's see what will happen for the last quarter of the end. PS: Sony Hater please don't bashing or respond to me or give negative comments blablabla, I am tired to respond you!!

In the Mobile landscape you can only do that for so long (Apple and Samsung can afford to do that as they have dominated the market for so long, Sony has never been in that position so have to work that much harder to win over consumers).

      Its a fiercely competitive landscape and all the OEMs are constantly pushing the each other to innovate/stand out

          And if I were that smart nonexistant guy in Sony Mobile design, Id use refreshed Arc design with the damn jack and side fp scanner back, for all new flags. And bring Playstation Now stream to table, and market the hell out of those phones (yes, even with questionable unmoral incentives, as that is obviously the winning game in mobile buissness today)

          But they should sack that moron guy at top of Mobile, for that smart guy to come to light.
          Wow, they put a curved oled on Xperia!? Wtf?
          Loyalists dont care, potential new customers have loads of cheaper oled phones out there to choose from...

          And would follow just that one trend, of creating a cheaper new brand like Huawei did with Honor.

          Those things would stand out, bring back loyalists like me, and add some new customers to the dinning table.

With a flagship chip, good speakers, a more color accurate display than the XS, IR blaster, durable build, big battery, and the headphone jack, Xiaomi had made possibly the best phone of the year at the lowest price possible

              A lot of opinions are that for a company that gives nearly stock Android, Sony should sell more. I'd say it's time Sony moves away from stock and implements their own UI with their own features and apps with an option to remove what users don't want. With the stock experience, Sony competes with Pixels and Android Ones without the quick updates. I am a Sony fan and used only Sony Ericssons during the feature phone era. In September, I bought my first Sony smartphone, the XZ2 Compact in September. Firstly, it was still stuck with the May security patch. Secondly, the OS was underwhelming like stock without the benefits of stock. Thirdly the camera was strange. It'd take a good picture, a second later it'd do some processing and the image would be ruined. Tried all the settings and options. Didn't help. Returned it in a week. Sonys aren't freely available. There are no authorised service centres, third party service don't stock spares or do much with Sony. Despite these restrictions, I did get one. But couldn't accept the stock OS and the camera for the price I was paying. The hardware and build is super, though. And they are the only ones making a small pocketable phone. But they can't continue doing the same thing and expect different results.

                It gives me the laughter that there are people here who do not assume that manufacturers like Xiaomi present better products than the mythical Sony, Samsung or Nokia, which believed that they were going to eat the world in the Android market.
                Well that's over friend, assume the Pocophone F1 is THE BEST smartphone in value for money on the market. It's real life and what there is, and the rest, like your comments, are stupid.

                      Sony does not go with times well, like old dying Samurai, very conservative refuses to accept changes. It took like 10 years for them to catch up with trending design from their blocky peaces of soap designs, and to actually move to OLED. And instead of focusing on what is matters, they decided that 4k screens on few inches phones was "briliant" idea to implement and worse, to charge for their phomes like it is Apple or Samsung logos it is carrying. No wonder they cant make any sales.

                        If i were sony engineers, i would use the old square design but with much thinner bezel and put the brand-name on the back, and without curved screen.

                            Sony loses money on their smartphones, overall they earn, but mostly due to Playstation and other divisions such as music.
